SLEX, Skyway, NAIAX, STAR, and TPLEX initiate shift to cashless payment
MANILA: Starting October 2020, SMC- (San Miguel Corporation) operated toll roads will begin phasing in a new cashless payment system using RFID (radio-frequency identification) tags.
SMC president and chief operating officer Ramon S. Ang maintains that the RFID stickers will be installed for free on all types of vehicles that use the Skyway, NAIAX (NAIA expressway), SLEX (South Luzon Expressway), STAR (Southern Tagalog Arterial Road) Tollways, and the TPLEX (Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway).
This move is in compliance with the directive of the TRB (Toll Regulatory Board) through the LTFRB (Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board) as a means of physically distancing and to prevent or limit the transmission of COVID-19.
“We are committed to protecting motorists and our tollway operators and ensuring that everyone’s health is safeguarded by limiting personal contact and going 100% RFID on toll roads that we operate,” said Ang.
The first phase begins on October 15 on the Skyway, NAIAX and SLEX followed by the second phase covering the at-grade sections of the three tollways and include STAR Tollways in southern Luzon and TPLEX in northern Luzon starting January 2021.
