Survey reveals Filipinos look forward to electrified mobility

MANILA: A recent study by Nissan and global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan revealed that more Filipinos and Southeast Asians are considering to purchase an electrified vehicle.

In September 2020, Frost & Sullivan conducted the second edition of its research on “The Future of Electrified Vehicles in Southeast Asia,” which was first released in January 2018. The new study was presented in the “Nissan Future – Electrification and Beyond” virtual event yesterday, February 4.

Some 3,000 online customers from Southeast Asian nations including Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore participated in the study. 64% stated that they are now more interested in buying an electrified vehicle than they were five years ago.

Meanwhile, 45% of Filipino motorists said that they would definitely include an electrified vehicle as on option for their next car purchase in the next three years. When asked on the reason why they are considering an electrified vehicle, Filipinos stated that its environmental benefits drive them the most.

It was also discovered that more Southeast Asians are becoming environmentally aware as 38% of the respondents believe that electrified vehicles would make a significant contribution to achieve a greener environment. This rate is relatively higher than the 34% of the respondents who provided the same answer in the 2018 survey.

When asked if their choice would by influenced by different power sources, 81% of the participants answered yes. Most of them are from the Philippines and Thailand.

Forty-eight percent of the respondents worry that the car battery of an EV may run out of power while on the road, but despite this hesitation, more motorists are still looking forward to use electrified vehicles.

The study showed that in order to successfully adopt electrified mobility in the country, car manufacturers would need full cooperation from government and the private sector. Most Filipino respondents (80%) said that they will be encouraged to purchase an electric vehicle if there will be tax incentives, while 77% stated that they may consider switching to an EV if there are more chargers installed in residential areas, while 52% said that having a priority lane for electrified vehicles would possibly influence them to buy an electrified vehicle.
