The all-new Porsche 911 GT3 is next-gen awesome
MANILA: Porsche has released another outstanding street-legal vehicle with motorsports capabilities. The seventh-generation 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 is engineered with lightweight materials, improved aerodynamics, and, for the first time, a double wishbone front axle.
The latest GT3 is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine that delivers a maximum power output of 502hp and a maximum torque of 346lb-ft. This powertrain is derived from the track-exclusive 911 GT3 Cup race car. Mated to the engine is a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission, but a six-speed manual transmission is also available upon request. The seven-speed PDK transmission provides the car the ability to accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in about 3.2 seconds.
Compared to the previous edition, the latest GT3 provides easier steering. It is also equipped with larger cast iron discs, which are 408mm in diameter. The car also gets Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) with rotors that have a diameter of 410mm in the front and 390 mm in the rear. The rotors were purposely structured to be lighter to achieve an upgraded thermal load capacity.
The 2022 911 GT3 is equipped with larger yet lighter alloy wheels—20-inches in front and 21-inches in the rear. The pin striping on the wheels may either be Shark Blue or Guards Red, depending on the customer’s preference.
The powerful performance of the new GT3 was proven when it completed the demanding Nürburgring-Nordschleife track in 6:59.927. In the final testing, the 911 GT3 performed 17 seconds faster than the previous edition.
The front fascia comes with new features to achieve better aerodynamics. It includes integrated cooling intakes, an adjustable front spoiler lip, and an adjustable front diffuser. The GT3 is also developed with side skirts and a large rear diffuser. The car’s rear wing can be manually adjusted for either road or track use.
Although the car has increased in size, the new GT3 weighs the same as its predecessor. The vehicle is structured with lightweight materials including carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) on the hood, rear wing, and fixed rear spoiler, and a noise insulated glass on all windows.
On the inside, the car maintains its racing poise as it is equipped with a GT3 multifunction sport steering wheel, which is wrapped in Race-Tex material. This is the first GT3 edition to get a drive mode switch.
The GT3 is installed with standard four-way Sport Seats Plus, but customers can request to customize the cabin with 18-way Sport Seats Plus and carbon full bucket seats. The new GT3 is also equipped with a new PDK gear selection lever, which is derived from a version of the manual transmission gearshift lever.
Porsche keeps the GT3’s instrumentation minimal by using a “Track Screen” function, which only displays the relevant car information to make the data more visible. The tire pressure and water temperature are shown on the left side, while the driver can configure the information on the right. Customers have an option to incorporate the Chrono Package which includes an analog and digital stopwatch and the Lap Trigger support. The lap trigger can be connected to a smartphone through the Porsche Track Precision app.
In a statement, Porsche Cars North America, Inc. President and CEO Kjell Gruner said, “With a soul that’s born in the Motorsport, the new 911 GT3 sends a driver’s heart racing. Whether it’s a customer enjoying their favorite twisty backroad or taking to the track, the new 911 GT3 promises to be among the most exciting and rewarding cars we make.”
