The Nissan Renault Mitsubishi bond will become even stiffer
MANILA: Ever since the arrest of the group’s chairman Carlos Ghosn in November 2018, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors Alliance has been covered in the clouds of uncertainty. However, the three automobile manufacturers unanimously decided to move forward holding each other’s hands and stay "Together Stronger".
A new operating board has been formed by the auto giants that will comprise of three major stakeholders ditching the one-man rule pursued by Carlos Ghosn. Nissan Global Headquarters in Yokohama in Japan was the place where the announcement was made.
The chairman of this new board will be Jean-Dominique Senard who will be accompanied by the CEOs of Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi Motors. Jean-Dominique Senard, Chairman of the Alliance and Renault, said, “We have agreed together to enhance and reinforce the alliance in the future. Actually, we have decided to join our force again to enhance the strength of our collaboration”.
Hiroto Saikawa, Thierry Bollore, and Osamu Masuko, who are the CEOs of Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi Motors, respectively, will have Senard as their representative. "We want to recreate the spirit of the alliance to the way it was at the very beginning. That is an alliance that is based on the total balance and fast decision-making process totally respectful of the cultures of our companies,
respectful of our brands," added Senard. The new operative board will also ditch the RNBV (Renault-Nissan BV), and NMBV (Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors BV) and the decision will now be taken by the chairman of the alliance and the three CEOs in conjunction.
While the three automobile manufacturers have already signed an MOU, a definitive agreement will be signed on 27th March when the alliance will also celebrate its 20th anniversary. Paris or Tokyo will be the places where monthly meetings will now be held,
and the major stakeholders will be kept updated concerning the alliance’s key value initiatives and achievements. This new alliance and the operative board should help the three automakers in becoming and achieving what they are capable of. The sales done by the alliance in the year 2018 is a mere indication of what it can do if headed in the right direction.
In the alliance’s newest communication, we see the term Nissan placed ahead of Renault, which indicates that the former has had a stronger input in laying the new path. The name of the alliance remains to be Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Motors, though.
The MOU also states that the chairman of Renault will be an eligible candidate for Vice Chairman and a Representative Director in Nissan. The Renault chairman will also be a candite for the chairmanship; however, only if the Nissan Special Committee on Improving Governance (SCIG) recommends.
