The secret behind Mazda’s great sounding stock stereo setup

MANILA: We recently did a story on how Mazda has made the 2020 Mazda3 even better with the latest wiper and sound isolation tech. And now, here we discuss the automaker's stock sound system. The automaker emphasised on two key factors - true sound reproduction and optimum loudness.

While that might not sound extravagant, but Mazda spent quite a lot of hours in designing an ideal speaker layout. Moreover, the process of designing the speaker layout began prior to the finalisation of the engine and chassis components. Moving on, Yamaguchi believes that the quality of sound is dependent on several factors including NVH levels, the capability of speakers, and how the occupants inside the car perceive the sound produced by the sound system.

Mazda started with employing ten damping nodes that reduce the NVH levels, lesser number of holes in the body, and reduced sound deflection courtesy of the new floor mats and headliner. Then the team changed the position of the speakers in the doors to the cowl, which resulted in better resonance, diminished rattling, and a much powerful sound. The mid-high range speaker that previously to sat on the upper dashboard was then moved to the upper door area. This reduced sound reflection and helped in producing a clear and precise tone.

So, with the new stock sound system in place, Mazda didn't need the Bose setup anymore as the former is equally good if not better than the latter. While the new sound system is called Mazda Harmonic Acoustics, the speakers are, however, still made by Pioneer, albeit especially for the 2020 Mazda3. That means you won't find these units in any other automobile. The Mazda Harmonic Acoustics is a delight for music lovers. Furthermore, the new speaker setup complements the Mazda3’s infotainment system very well. The infotainment system on the 2020 Mazda3 not only supports videos files and conventional MP3, OGG, WMA, and AAC audio formats but also high-definition music files such as FLAC.
