Things seem interesting as Mazda files a patent for MX-30 nameplate
MANILA: Mazda filing a patent for the nameplate “MX-30” at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has caused a stir in the automobile space. While there is information whatsoever on what kind of a car the MX-30 could be, the sparkles of excitement are already there. What makes it clear that the patent has been filed for the name of a car is the words 'Automobiles, parts and fittings thereof, but excluding tires and tubes' mentioned in the patent file.
Considering the recent ballooning of the crossover segment around the globe, speculations are being made that the upcoming car could eventually be a sports-oriented crossover by the Japanese automaker. This shall enable the enthusiasts around to have a taste of the US exclusive model, the CX-5 2.5 Turbo by Mazda.
Looking back at the history, the prefix MX has usually been used for sporty coupe models like MX-3 and MX-6. While the MX-3 was the smaller, the MX-6 was the elder sibling of the Mazda MX-5. While both the MX-3 and MX-6 were front-wheel-drive coupes, the two Mazdas were a three-door liftback and a mid-sized coupe, respectively.
As of now, Mazda is making sure of not to spill any beans. However, considering the contracting coupe market, another sexy coupe by Mazda with the nameplate MX-30 might just be in the works. So, with both, a crossover and a sporty coupe seeming a possibility, what would the actual Mazda MX-30 be? Let’s leave it on time to tell.
