KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will BMW launch a new fuel-cell electric vehicle?

BMW is planning to launch a new fuel-cell electric vehicle in 2028.
  • What is the objective of Toyota and BMW’s strengthened partnership?

The strengthened partnership between Toyota and BMW aims to develop and produce more hydrogen-powered cars.
  • Per Toyota, the strengthening of the partnership aims to create a “hydrogen society,” which will eventually lead towards overall carbon neutrality.

One of the first initiatives undertaken by Japanese and German manufacturers per the new agreement is the development of a third-generation fuel cell system. The aforementioned will allow the two car makers to roll out more fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV).

BMW, in particular, is aiming to launch its first mass-produced FCEV in 2028. As a reminder, Toyota has already introduced the first generation Mirai in 2014. The second-generation version of the model, which was launched back in 2020, is currently sold by the Nagoya-based car brand in select markets around the world.

Additionally, the two automotive firms will also work together to establish a network of hydrogen-producing facilities. Doing the aforementioned will ensure a stable supply of the said fuel type.

“We are pleased that the collaboration between BMW and Toyota has entered a new stage. In our long history of partnership, we have confirmed that BMW and Toyota share the same passion for cars and belief in ‘technology openness’ and a ‘multi-pathway’ approach to carbon neutrality,” President of Toyota Koji Sato said.

“Based on these shared values, we will deepen our collaboration in efforts such as the joint development of next-generation fuel cell systems and the expansion of infrastructure, aiming for the realization of a hydrogen society. We will accelerate our efforts together with BMW and partners across various industries to realize a future where hydrogen energy supports society,” Sato added.

As a side note, the relationship between Toyota and BMW is not new, and the two entities have worked together since 2011. One of the most recognizable products of the said collaboration is the Toyota GR Supra, which is based on the BMW Z4 roadster.

Toyota also noted its continuing commitment to providing various forms of powertrains depending on the mobility needs of a particular region. The aforementioned falls under the company’s multi-pathway approach, which includes the further development of battery-electric vehicles and hybrids.
