MANILA: Toyota Motor Corporation has developed its latest hydrogen fuel cell system as a means to continue its mission of realizing a hydrogen-based society.

    Specifically, the latest fuel cell system from Toyota was made to be as durable as conventional diesel-powered engines. It is also touted to have improvements in performance and 20 percent more cruising range compared to the older hydrogen system. 

    For reference, the European market version of the Toyota Mirai has a range of 650 kilometers. It also has a minimum refueling time of less than five minutes. Output-wise, the Euro-spec Mirai can generate up to 182 horsepower and 300 Newton-meters of torque.

    Per Toyota, future applications of its third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system can include the following:

    • Commercial vehicles
    • Stationary generators
    • Rail transportation
    • Marine applications
    • Passenger cars

    Toyota is yet to release any technical specifications for its newest hydrogen fuel-cell system, but more details could be released during its official unveiling at the 2025 H2 & FC Expo. The said event will be held at Tokyo Big Sight on February 19-21, 2025, and it is one of the largest global events focusing on hydrogen and fuel cell technology.
