Where will Toyota develop autonomous vehicles?
Toyota noted that it will develop autonomous vehicles at Woven City. What is the Toyota e-Palette?
The Toyota e-Palette is an autonomous bus made by Toyota.During the company’s presentation at the tech expo, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda presented attendees with a short video of two Supra cars that can drift autonomously.
“Between you and me, as Toyota’s Master Driver, I personally thought that autonomous vehicles were a bit — you know — boring. Until our team showed me these two Toyota race cars that drift autonomously,” Toyoda noted during his CES 2025 talk.
The short video revealed that the two cars shift, steer, and accelerate on their own. A person can be seen sitting in the driver’s seat but does not have his (or her) hand on the steering wheel or the gear shifter and the hand brake.
Moreover, the word “AUTONOMOUS” is displayed on the center screen, maybe to make it clear that the Toyota Supras in the video are dancing on their own accord.
“I mean, as the kids would say, ‘that slaps’ and ‘I’m totally here for it,’” Toyoda said after presenting the video.
This is not the first time the public has seen a self-driving Toyota Supra as the Toyota Research Institute (TRI) experimented on a similar vehicle and technology sometime in 2022. The author’s report about the said GR Supra can be read on Zigwheels Philippines’ sister platform Carmudi Philippines.
There it was stated that the goal of the TRI researchers who worked on the Toyota GR Supra was to “utilize controlled, autonomous drifting to avoid accidents by navigating sudden obstacles or hazardous road conditions.”
Developing autonomous automobiles
The company’s Chair continued to note that Toyota will develop autonomous driving vehicles at Woven City — a smart metropolis that aims to give people a glimpse of what the world could achieve with innovations in technology.
“So, autonomous driving will be among the many technologies we intend to develop at Woven City,” Toyoda stated.
The company’s future self-driving cars will reportedly be powered by the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin running the safety-certified NVIDIA DriveOS operating system.
“The autonomous vehicle revolution has arrived, and automotive will be one of the largest AI (artificial intelligence) and robotics industries,” NVIDIA Founder and Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said in a press release.
“NVIDIA is bringing two decades of automotive computing, safety expertise, and its CUDA AV platform to transform the multitrillion-dollar auto industry,” he added.
Toyota did not further disclose any information about its upcoming autonomous vehicles. However, the carmaker may start building on simple yet helpful solutions like the e-Palette, which can transport people to places without the need of a driver.
