What are Toyota's plans in battery electric vehicles (BEVs)?
Toyota plans to launch 30 and sell 3.5 million BEVs by 2030. Likewise, the carmaker has similar goals for Lexus. Why will Toyota continue to develop hybrid and hydrogen vehicles alongside BEVs?
Toyota Chief Akio Toyoda said that before his company would shift to full EVs, it will observe the EV market first.During his presentation, Toyota President Akio Toyoda announced that the company is going to roll out 30 BEV models, and is anticipating sales of 3.5 million BEVs globally by 2030.
Meanwhile, the Lexus brand aims to have BEVs account for 100% of sales in Europe, North America, and China by 2030.
To make the above goals possible, Toyota will invest ¥8 trillion yen for the electrification of its lineup by 2030, with the half of the amount going to a lineup of BEVs.
The electrified Toyota and Lexus concept cars that were presented included sedans, SUVs, a small crossover designed for Europe and Japan, a pickup truck, a sports car and a supercar.
But aside from BEVs, Toyoda said his company will still pursue technologies for hybrid cars and hydrogen-powered vehicles.
"We want to leave all people with a choice, and rather than where or what we will focus on, we will wait a little longer until we understand where the market is going," Toyoda said.
Meanwhile, Toyoda said that with hydrogen technology, some of Japan's 5.5 million jobs in the automotive production could be retained, as some of Toyota's supply chains could disappear with a total shift to electric cars.
