Toyota unveils improvements on hydrogen-powered Corolla for Super Taikyu Series

MANILA: Toyota Motor Corporation participated at the ENEOS Super Taikyu Series 2023 Round 7 Fuji 4 Hours Race with the #32 ORC Rookie GR Corolla H2 Concept and the #28 ORC Rookie GR86 CNF Concept.

The GR Corolla H2 Concept, powered by liquid hydrogen, has undergone significant upgrades since the Round 4 Super Taikyu Race in July.

Toyota has improved the car's pressure boosting performance and the pump's durability to produce the same level of output as gasoline engines.

The Japanese carmaker’s target for the H2 Concept was to achieve 20 laps per hydrogen fill-up, therefore, they made sure that there is now a better accuracy in determining hydrogen tank fullness, minimizing the amount of boil-off gas by reducing the heat entering the tank, and optimizing fuel injection when the gas pedal is not fully depressed.

Some parts were also made lighter by adjusting their thickness. The weight of the tank, safety valve, boil-off gas valve, roll cage, and high-pressure hydrogen system parts were reduced, making the car 50 kilograms lighter than it was in July.

Another initiative that Toyota will take involving hydrogen technology is the on-road feasibility testing of the hydrogen-powered Hiace in Australia.

The test, which started in October and will last until January next year, is a vital part in honing the carmaker’s hydrogen engine technology that was refined through its participation in the Super Taikyu series. It will help develop the technology’s practicality on public roads.

“Toyota will continue to accelerate development by refining cars and people in the challenging world of motorsports. It will also continue to work with its partners to increase options in order to create an even better carbon-neutral society,” the carmaker said in a press release.
