Toyota Wigo: Features explained
Quick question, which car won the Model of the Year (MOY) award in 2015, 2017, and 2018? No answer? Okay, we will give you a hint. It’s the same car that also won the 2018 Automobile of the Year (AOY) award. Still blank? Here’s another hint. Its name is in the title of this story. Yes! The correct answer is Toyota Wigo. You got that right pretty quick, didn’t you?
Toyota Wigo has been winning not just awards but also the hearts of the Filipinos for some time now. It is expert in luring customers and making them fall in love with it. So, how does it do it? Let us try to find out by discussing some of its top features.
On the outside
The first thing that a hatchback needs to have to get more attention from people is good styling. The Wigo ticks off this checkbox very comfortable. It features a funky and modern design which should appeal more to the youngsters. At the front, it has a pair of cool-looking headlamps that come with projector units for enhanced functionality.
These headlamps are bridged together by a sleek horizontal chrome strip that also houses the brand’s logo. To add a bit of sportiness to the face of the Wigo, Toyota has provided a big blacked-out grille which covers most of the front bumper and looks pretty good. Then there are the fog lamps on either side which are fitted in a nicely designed housing.
There is nothing much to talk about the side of the Wigo except the stylish alloy wheels. The rear, however, gets a roof-mounted spoiler with a stop lamp. This does help in making the car look much more sporty. The tail lights feature a two-piece design which might not be usual for a hatchback but the Wigo pulls it off nicely. It is the rear bumper that is the centre of attention thanks to its sporty appearance.
On the inside
Out of the many things on the outside of the Toyota Wigo, you must have noticed that its dimensions are quite compact. Yes, that’s true, and it helps in easy driveability, but that doesn’t mean the cabin has to be a claustrophobic space. Toyota has worked wonders with its smart space management and gave the Wigo one of the most impressive cabin spaces that you would ever encounter on a car of its segment.
While there is a good amount of space, you wouldn’t find the seats to be extremely comfortable. Perhaps, Toyota didn’t work on that much. Also, the front seats are only two-way adjustable which makes it a bit tricky to find your comfortable sitting position.
And when you have a non-adjustable steering wheel, things could get even more annoying. In terms of equipment, the Wigo gets Navi-ready display audio with AM/FM/CD/MP3/USB/AUX support, steering mounted audio controls, conventional instrument cluster, manual AC, various storage spaces, power windows, etc.
Under the hood
One of the main features on the Toyota Wigo specs sheet is its 1.0-litre 3-cylinder VVT-i engine. It is employed in all the three variants of the car. The mill produces 66 hp of maximum power at 6,000 rpm and 89 Nm of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. It comes mated to either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. Toyota has harmonised both the engine and transmission to perform optimally and give the customer the best of both worlds - performance and efficiency.
Safety equipment
Yes, Toyota takes safety very seriously but all the safety features come at a price. And to make a car sell, price plays a vital role especially in a price sensitive country like ours. Perhaps, that’s why Toyota limited the number of safety features to basic on the Wigo. What we get includes dual front SRS airbags, ABS, seatbelts, and child lock protection. And for security, there is an anti-theft system and wireless door lock. We wish Toyota should have squeezed in a couple of more safety features.
There you have it guys. These were some of the top features of the Toyota Wigo. Hopefully, now you would know why it won all those awards. The hatch is available in six colors - Black, Red, White, Silver Metallic, Gray Metallic and Orange Metallic. Coming to the most important aspect, money, the Toyota Wigo price starts at Php 547,000 for the base model and reaches to Php 621,000 for the range-topping variant.
