Turbo returns to the 2020 Subaru Legacy

MANILA: The Subaru Legacy GT was a legend in its own right. It epitomized the word sleeper with its simple looks and a 2.5-litre turbo engine. The Legacy ended up losing the turbo and was replaced with a bigger sedate 6-cylinder engine.

Things are going to change in 2020. The boxer turbo engine is set to make a comeback in the new Legacy, and it is being called the XT version. This new 2.4-litre 4-cylinder boxer engine, from the Ascent crossover, makes 260 PS and a healthy 375 Nm of torque. Although it loses 5 horsepower to the old GT,

it gains 25 Nm of torque. The 0-100 kmph is run down in 6.5 seconds while returning a claimed 13 kmpl. Apart from this, Subaru is also offering a 2.5-litre non-turbo powerplant. This engine makes 182 PS (up from 175 PS) and 237 Nm of torque. Both these engines are mated to a CVT gearbox and Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.

Exterior changes to the new Legacy are rather muted, taking cues from the Impreza and Forester. The bumper corners are smoothened with a black trim running across the front end. A narrower taller front grille is flanked by newly redesigned headlights. The rear windscreen is now more raked, and the tail lights are reminiscent of the ones on the Impreza.

Jumping inside the Legacy, the dashboard has a multi-layered wraparound design. The attention-grabbing 11-inch vertical touchscreen at the centre displays vehicle information. It also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Subaru is using the same steering wheel as seen on the new Forester on the Legacy. The EyeSight safety suite from Subaru is also available.

As of now, there is no news as to when the new Legacy will land in the Asia-Pacific market. It will be launched in the US first. Locking horns with the 2020 Legacy are the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima.
