Volkswagen drops the idea of releasing 10-speed DSG Dual-clutch Transmission
But eight and nine-speed automatics are increasing considerably. Looking to the 9-speed gear boxes, 10-speed automatics might appear good. During 2013, Ford and General Motors collaborated for the production of 10-speed automatics and then Volkswagen planned to produce 10-speed, dual clutch automatic in 2014. But later on, VW decided to drop the plan as producing 10-speed automatics is not so feasible and appears a bit complex in nature.
The 10-speed transmission is inspired from the current seven-speeder with a Code-named DQ511. The additional gears were installed within by shortening the first and second gear ratios. It was expected that the design would increase the acceleration and improve smoothness. The required 10- speed can be achieved by adding another gear at the top which may lead to increase in efficiency.
Volkswagen has not revealed that the cancellation might leave an impact on its future cars or not, but most probably they will come up with more efficient and conventional transmission system. At present, VW's highest gear-count dual-clutch is the 7-speed DSG. Since most of the automakers are offering nine-speed automatic transmissions Ford Motors and GM are planning to come up with 10-speed transmission thereby VW decided to design a bit complex transmission system but the things went undesirable as the design became complex and costlier.
It was anonymously revealed that the development is very expensive and complex. An unnamed source at Frankfurt says, “In the end, we had to balance what our priorities were with our transmissions and other things are more important and more urgent.”
