Volkswagen MEB+ platform to boost range, charging time of brand's EVs

MANILA: Until recently, all of Volkswagen's electrification efforts have been centered on its modular electric platform, the MEB. The automaker debuted the small Cupra Born hatchback and the large ID Buzz Kombi on the same architecture. The aforementioned platform is found in over 67,000 cars produced by various VW group brands.

However, the German automaker has now improved its modular electric platform. The new, updated platform, known as the MEB+, will allow future EVs to have greater range and charging efficiency.

Volkswagen’s official statement on its MEB+ said that it will continue “investing substantially in its further development in order to leverage the full potential of this successful platform and ensure that it remains competitive.”

The following are the primary features of the Volkswagen MEB+ platform: Volkswagen Group's cell facility in Salzgitter will produce new generation 'unit cell' batteries. The new 'unit cell' battery technology will increase the range to 700 kilometers while also dramatically boosting charging time.

The new platform will improve on the previous-generation architecture's autonomous driving functions through improved digital infrastructure. Volkswagen's MEB+ platform will assist the automaker in meeting its EV range objectives, with ten new vehicles set to arrive by 2026.

The new MEB+ platform-based model lineup will comprise entry-level models, fully-electric SUVs (codenamed e-SUV), and additional cars in the premium and performance classes.

“The MEB still has significant potential. Our ambition is to take this platform to the next level. To that end, we are making substantial investments in advancing this technology. The MEB+ puts us in an excellent position for the coming years,” said Thomas Schafer, Volkswagen CEO.

Similarly, Volkswagen unveiled the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) in 2021. The SSP, designed as a successor to the MEB, will be seen supporting the forthcoming Volkswagen Trinity EV project, which is set to debut in 2026.
