Volkswagen released design sketches for 2021 Atlas

MANILA: Volkswagen just published three design sketches for the updated Atlas and we like what we see.

The new VW midsize SUV gets bigger with an additional three inches in overall length and a refreshed exterior taking cues from the more compact two-row VW Cross Sport. The additional length of the Atlas has nothing to do with the cabin size but due to the redesigned bolder bumper in line with pedestrian safety guidelines. The longer bumper has to do with adding more cushioning foam to improve pedestrian safety.

The front fascia is redesigned to integrate the new bumper design and black vent accents. The new generation VW Atlas got rid of its chunky headlights in favour of a slimmer LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights integrated seamlessly to the design. The redesigned front grille covers most of the bumper for an aggressive, sporty look. The same design concept continues to the rear with a narrow strip of red reflector running the full-width of the hatch and connects the taillights. The Atlas rides on a set of 21-inch wheels which might seem big but we think it is just appropriate for its size.

Though the sketches only preview the outside, inside, the new 2021 Atlas is said to have a leather steering wheel, an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless phone charging, and leather seats with double-stitching details.

The new VW Atlas would also feature updated safety and driver assistance technology such as adaptive cruise control stop-and-go along with low-speed lane centring, Dynamic Road Sign Detection, and Traffic Jam Assist.

Accordingly, there will be no changes under the hood. The 2021 VW Atlas will still be powered by either a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an output of 235 hp and 349 Nm or a 3.6-litre V6 engine that delivers 276 hp of power and 360 Nm of torque.

The new 2021 Atlas will globally debut in February 2020 at the Chicago Auto Show before its commercial release in showrooms beginning May 2020.
