Volkswagen reveals groundbreaking Trinity EV project for 2026
MANILA: Volkswagen gave a first glimpse of its upcoming electric sedan that will be manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany by 2026.
The sedan development project is named Trinity, which is derived from the Latin word “trinitas” that means triad. This is associated with the vehicle’s three crucial themes: a newly developed EV platform with cutting-edge software, the simplification of the supply structure, and the intelligent production at the main plant.
In a statement, Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter said, “Trinity is a sort of crystallization point for our Accelerate strategy, a lighthouse project, our software dream car.” The sedan will be engineered with a vehicle architecture that features outstanding range, extremely short charging times (“charging as fast as refueling”), and groundbreaking digitalization. The Trinity is set to use a highly automated driving function.
Volkswagen targets to start the production in 2026. The Trinity is poised to qualify as a Level 2+ vehicle and be technically equipped for Level 4. Brandstätter stated, “We are using our economies of scale to make autonomous driving available to many people and to build a learning neural network. In this way, we are creating the conditions for the continuous exchange of data from our vehicle fleet — for example, on the traffic situation, on obstacles or on accidents. Trinity therefore becomes a kind of 'time machine' for our customers.”
The Volkswagen Wolfsburg plant will be the home of the intelligent and fully networked production processes of the innovative Trinity sedan. “We will completely rethink the way we build cars and introduce revolutionary approaches. Digitalization, automation, and lightweight construction play an important role here,” continued Brandstätter.
Volkswagen’s upcoming vehicle models, including the Trinity, will be available in fewer variants and the hardware will be standardized to minimize the difficulties in production. The car comes with a digital ecosystem that will allow the customers to instantly enable their preferred functions.
Volkswagen anticipates to generate additional digital revenue over the period of use for charging and energy services, software-based features, and automated driving. Brandstätter stated, “In the future, the individual configuration of the vehicle will no longer be determined by the hardware at the time of purchase. Instead, customers will be able to add functions on demand at any time via the digital ecosystem in the car.”
