Volkswagen reveals latest exit warning system

MANILA: Volkswagen has revealed the latest iteration of its exit warning system.

According to the German carmaker, the latest version of the said safety feature can help occupants avoid dangerous situations when exiting the vehicle in inner-city traffic.

The assist system, the Wolfsburg-based brand noted, can warn the driver and passengers about road users approaching the parked Volkswagen from behind. For example, within system limits, the system can detect cyclists approaching the car.

Per Volkswagen, the said exit warning system works by scanning the area behind the vehicle using two rear sensors — on the left and right bumper. The radars then send signals to inform the passengers of a danger before a door handle is even operated.

“If a road user is approaching, an LED light in the exterior mirror automatically lights up as the first warning level. If one of the door openers is nevertheless pressed, the door is also prevented from opening for a short period of time. If the door is opened, a warning signal sounds,” Volkswagen explained in a press release.

Furthermore, Volkswagen pointed out that the assist system remains active for three minutes after the car has been parked and switched off in order to cover all passengers who exit the vehicle.

The new Volkswagen ID.7, new Passat, and new Tiguan all come with this safety technology as standard. Meanwhile, the Golf, ID.4, and ID.5, can be had with the said feature in a technically specific form.
