Volkswagen & Toyota leap over Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi

MANILA: With 10.76 million sales last year, the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance topped the charts and grabbed the title of largest automaker of 2018. Talking about the first half of 2019, the alliance has slipped to the third spot with Volkswagen Auto Group (VAG) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) now standing tall at the first and second position respectively.

From January 2019 to June 2019, the Volkswagen Auto Group (VAG) managed to trade a total of 5,365,300 vehicles. Even though VAG is now sitting at the top of the ladder, the sales figures for the automobile group have dropped by 2.8%. In case you don't know yet, all of the Volkswagen, Skoda, SEAT, Audi, Porsche, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley, Ducati, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, MAN Trucks and Buses, and Scania brands are owned by the Volkswagen Auto Group (VAG).

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), which consists of Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu, and Hino, saw an increase of 2% in its sales in the first half of 2019. With that said, the automaker traded 5,311,806 vehicles from January 2019 to June 2019. Out of the 5,311,806 units, 1.2 million vehicles were sold in Japan alone.

Even though the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has seven more brands like Infiniti, Renault Samsung, Dacia, Alpine, Datsun, Venucia, and Lada under its roof, the group suffered severe losses in the first half of 2019 as the sales declined by 5.9% during the period. Regarding the pros in the alliance, while Nissan and Renault's sales went down by 7.9% and 6.7%, respectively, Mitsubishi Motors sprung a surprise and grew by 5%. With a contribution of 2.63 million units by Nissan, 1.94 million vehicles by Renault, and 647,422 automobiles by Mitsubishi Motors, the alliance was successful in trading 5,210,000 vehicles from January 2019 to June 2019.

With half of the year still to go and a very thin gap between the VAG and TMC sales, the battle in the automobile space is going be an interesting one. Have you got your popcorns ready?
