MANILA: Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new Tayron, which sits between the Tiguan and the Touareg sport utility vehicles (SUV).

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the available powertrains for the Volkswagen Tayron?

The available powertrains for the Volkswagen Tayron include a 1.5-liter mild-hybrid turbocharged gasoline engine, two 2.0-liter diesel engines with different tunes, and two 1.5-liter PHEV powertrains with different tunes.
  • What seating configurations are available for the Volkswagen Tayron?

The Volkswagen Tayron may come with a five-seater, two-row setup or a seven-seater, three-row configuration.
  • For folks who have never heard of the Tayron, its first-gen model was initially launched in China back in 2018. Now, in 2024, the all-new second-gen iteration is positioned by the marque as a global model.

According to the German car brand, the all-new SUV offers high levels of practicality, plenty of onboard technologies, and efficient electrified performance. It can come in a five-seater or seven-seater layout and is touted as a potent ride for families or adventurous people who are always on the move.

So, what is the Volkswagen Tayron offering? Let us all find out.

    Exterior

Appearance-wise, the model comes with a striking SUV design, with its large front air intake, squared-off corners, a high-riding roof, and a decent amount of black plastic claddings on its wheel arches.

Positioned at the front of the vehicle are a pair of sharp-looking LED headlamp clusters, as well as an illuminated Volkswagen badge. Its rear section, meanwhile, wears a full-length LED bar with 3D taillight clusters and another illuminated Volkswagen logo.

Completing the appearance of the model is a set of 17 to 19-inch alloy wheels.

    Interior

As mentioned above, the next-gen Tayron may come in a seven-seater, three-row setup, or a two-row five-seater configuration. All versions, however, offer a wealth of standard equipment for added comfort and convenience.

Here is a list of standard features for the all-new model according to Volkswagen:

    • Digital instrument cluster
    • Three-zone automatic climate control system
    • Multifunctional driving experience control (4WD and drive mode selector)
    • Ambient lighting

Additionally, specific variants of the Volkswagen SUV were kitted out with leather and microfiber upholstery, electronically adjustable seats with ventilation and massage, noise-insulating safety glass, keyless entry, a tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof, and an electronic trunk door, among others.

Handling onboard entertainment and navigation for the ride is a 12.5-inch central infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The said system can handle voice commands via the artificial intelligence-powered IDA voice assistant. The model may also come with an optional 700-watt sound system.

Likewise notable is the cargo capacity of the all-new SUV. For the two-row model, it has a default carrying capacity of 885 liters. The three-row version, meanwhile, offers a default cargo capacity of 345 liters.

    Safety

Handling the safety needs of the Volkswagen Tayron’s occupants is done by an array of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS), which include the following:

    • Automatic emergency braking
    • Adaptive cruise control
    • Park assist
    • Pedestrian and cyclist detection
    • Lane change assist
    • Exit warning system

    Powertrains

All of its trims of the next-gen Tayron come standard with a six-speed automatic dual-clutch gearbox.

For the entry-level trims, the model is propelled by a 1.5-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid gasoline mill capable of producing up to 148 horsepower (hp) and 250 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque.

Higher up in the variant range are two 2.0-liter TDI (diesel) engines. The front-wheel-drive-only version can churn out 148 hp and 360 Nm of torque, while the one with all-wheel-drive can make up to 201 hp and 400 Nm of torque.

Its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) versions, meanwhile, combine a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor. The first can churn out 201 hp, and another has a peppier 268 hp output.

Per the Wolfsburg-headquartered carmaker, the PHEV versions of the Tayron can cover 100 kilometers using its electric-only mode. It also has an electronic boost function for added power as needed, as well as a regenerative braking system for recovering power.

Lastly, the battery can also be charged using an 11-kilowatt AC wall box or a DC quick-charging station.

    Availability

Volkswagen has already started the ordering period for the all-new Tayron in Europe, where it is offered with a starting price of 45,475 Euros, or around P2.8 million at current exchange rates.

Being a family-friendly ride, many car buyers here in the Philippines might want to see the all-new model reach local Volkswagen dealerships. Plus, the brand currently lacks a three-row model in its locally available lineup of vehicles.

Do remember, though, that the brand’s local arm currently sources its offerings from China. As such, the chances of seeing the global version of the Tayron in the Philippines might be slim.
