Riding solo: Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX
'Bite-size' adventure motorcycle packs a punch
Suzuki’s motorcycle arm in the Philippines unleashed the V-Strom 250 SX in late 2022, making it the only model in the country that falls under the 250 cubic-centimeter (cc) adventure category.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How much is the Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX?
The motorcycle is priced at P229,000.What is the Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX's unique selling proposition?
The motorcycle is the sole model in the country that is under the 250 cubic-centimeter (cc) adventure category. But is a “budget” adventure motorcycle worth getting your hands into? Here’s what we have learned after a short ride with the Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX.
Dimensions
The Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX stands 2,180 millimeters (mm) long, 880 mm wide, and 1,355 mm tall with a 1,440 mm wheelbase, road clearance of 205 mm, and seat height of 835 mm.
For someone who is a little over six feet, the motorcycle gave an almost-standing position — thereby boosting riding confidence.
Arms are not too stretched nor bent for my size as the distance between the seat and the handlebars is enough to properly steer and control the steed — especially during long rides.
Although it is a low-displacement two-wheeler, the ride seems relatively heavy compared to 250cc motorcycles, but the overall design makes it nimble and friendly — even to beginners.
Aesthetics
The Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX exudes a sporty appeal, thanks to its features that make it a proper adventure motorcycle.
It has the distinct beak-like front as seen in all members of the V-Strom roster and a windshield that could be improved if it were adjustable.
The 19-inch wheels in 100/90 tires and 17-inch with 140//70 tires in semi-block style pattern complemented the motorcycle’s overall athletic layout — though I think it would have been extra if it would have been outfitted with steel spokes.
In addition, it has a sufficient amount of attention-grabbing body color present on the front and rear fairing to match the aggressive stance.
Comfort, convenience, safety
Comfort is one of the Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX’s strong suits. Aside from the ideal height, the seat design does not hurt my backside. Foot pegs for the pillion would give the companion a good position.
Since it is thinner and lighter than the bigger V-Strom models that we are more familiar with, it would be easier to use the 250 SX version on city roads. The ground clearance as well as the coil-spring suspensions (telescopic at the front and swing arm type at the back) also made it easier to glide over humps and absorb the ruts on the road.
Meanwhile, its engine under cowling knuckle covers assure safety during the ride.
At the center of the handlebar is an inverted digital instrument panel that dishes out readable ride information even while on the go.
Powertrain
Propelling the V-Strom 250 SX is a 249 cubic-centimeter four stroke, four valve, oil cooled, single overhead cam fuel-injected engine with Suzuki Eco performance technology. It might not have access to tollways (as dictated under the Philippine law), but fun and excitement can still be part of its churn as the mill can provide up to 26 horsepower and 22 Newton-meters of pulling power. The mill is connected to dual exhaust pipes.
Helping the engine give out optimum churn is its six-speed constant mesh transmission.
Stopping power comes from the 310 mm disc brake with master cylinder at the front and 240 mm disc brakes at the rear with dual channel anti-lock braking system.
Driven on paved but relatively-steep roads, the oomph is immediately delivered even at low revs.
Pros, cons
Being the only model that fits the 250cc adventure category, the Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX is ready for a unique market with its offerings.
Customers who want a motorcycle that has the height of tourer but is on a budget may want to consider this. This will give its rider a commanding stance on the road and has the size to bob and weave through city traffic.
Available in Champion Yellow and Glass Sparkle Black, the Suzuki V-Strom 250SX is being retailed for P229,000.
