KTM Duke 390: Top alternatives
The KTM Duke 390 is one of the best motorcycles out there in the budget segment. It goes like a rocket, has equipment that even big bikes can dream about and more importantly it all falls within the budget. The second-generation KTM Duke 390 came out in 2017 and it had a significantly improved power delivery as well as more features.
The 2018 KTM Duke 390 specifications include a TFT instrument console, Bluetooth connectivity, improved heat dissipation as well as chassis geometry. KTM still uses the 373cc single cylinder engine that produces 43.5 PS of power and is mated to a 6-speed slipper clutch gearbox. Keeping with the emission norms, the exhaust is side slung too. The KTM Duke 390 price too has increased and is now Php 299,000.
So, what are one’s options for the KTM Duke 390 then? Scroll down to take a look.
BMW G 310 R
The BMW G 310 R was conceptualised way back in 2012. It is here in the Philippines because BMW collaborated with Indian motorcycle maker TVS to bring in low-cost sub-500cc bikes. These motorcycles will be made in India to keep the costs low and exported from there to emerging markets.
If you’re looking at a BMW G 310 R, you will realise that it has got the typical BMW roadster looks. The 313cc single cylinder oil cooled engine makes 34 PS of power and 28 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The motorcycle too has an all-digital meter console which gives out all the information the rider will ever need. The seating position too is neutral and less committed than on the Duke. When you compare the Duke 390 specifications, then the common thing here is the presence of dual channel ABS and Metzeler tyres.
As far as pricing is concerned, the BMW G 310 R costs Php 300,000. The BMW offers less power and no other stellar features than the Duke, except perhaps the badge.
Royal Enfield Classic 500
The Royal Enfield Classic 500 is not really a competitor to the KTM Duke 390. However, if you look at the price, then you realise that the RE also falls in the same price bracket. One gets a lot of chrome and a much bigger motorcycle visually and dimensionally than the other two vehicles mentioned here. Royal Enfield has also ensured that the classic approach remains with this vehicle. The round headlights, no modern amenities like ABS or grippier rubber and more. The instrument cluster is a simple analogue unit. However, comfort is the key with the Royal Enfield Classic 500. It can do long distance touring with a pillion very easily.
The 500cc engine single cylinder, air-cooled engine makes 27 PS of power and a massive (comparatively) 41 Nm of torque. The gearbox is a 5-speed unit. Recently, RE has started rolling out ABS-equipped brakes globally. We expect them to start offering the same here as well shortly. The Royal Enfield Classic 500 price is Php 329,000. It offers far lower performance than the BMW or the Duke but is the most comfortable option out there for touring.
Used Suzuki Alto 800
This is called one of the most reliable cars in the world. A simple 800 cc engine with fuel injection and easy-to-repair mechanicals is the recipe for this best seller. The Suzuki Alto 800 is priced upwards of Php 400,000 when new. However, a used one can be obtained for almost as less as a new KTM Duke 390 price. It will seat four with reasonable comfort, have a mileage half of the 300s and 500s here and have a service cost approximately the same as the others here. You don’t need to carry around your riding gear or don’t have to worry about luggage falling off. The sun or rain will not bother you either.
There are also other cars which one can buy, albeit used, for the price of a KTM Duke 390. There is also the Toyota Wigo or even the Hyundai Eon. At a pinch, one can also ask for the Nissan Almera base trim at this price. There are alternatives galore to a new KTM Duke 390. However, it depends on the requirements as well as the budget restrictions. One can also get a used first generation model for as less as Php 150,000.
