Suzuki Philippines confirms the return of Katana

MANILA: Almost 39 years after the debut of the very first Katana prototype, Suzuki has assured the return of this iconic two-wheeler at the 13th Inside Racing Bike Fest and Trade Show in Manila. The three-day show was organised by the ‘Inside Racing Magazine’ at the World Trade Centre from 22nd to 24th March. Also, Yamaha Philippines launched the 2019 MT-15 at the same event. 

The arrival of the upcoming Katana was first hinted with a teaser video at the Intermot 2018 motorcycle show. It was also revealed that the new motorcycle would be developed on the Katana 3.0 Concept. Suzuki itself doesn't make the concept, and it was designed by the Italian magazine Motociclismo — in collaboration with a veteran motorcycle designer, Rodolfo Frascoli and the Italian firm, Engines Engineering.

Reviving back the Katana has been a significant plan of the Japanese manufacturer. The Katana that took birth in 1981 was among the fastest production motorbikes in the world. No doubt that the company will launch its new bike with revamped internals. However, as per the available pictures, the street runner alongside adorning a new outfit will also retain a bit of its 80s forefather elements.

The 2020 Katana will feature an LCD dash, LED headlamp, along with easy start and low rpm assist. The motorcycle will provide necessary comfort via completely-adjustable 43 mm KYB inverted front forks alongside a monoshock with adjustable damping and preload. Braking requirements are taken care of by 310 mm dual discs at the front with Brembo Monobloc four-piston callipers. Moreover, the brakes are also be supplemented by dual-channel ABS.

The 2020 Katana is powered by a 999 cc, four-banger engine, which is capable of delivering a maximum power of 152 PS at 10,000 rpm along with a peak torque of 108 Nm at 9,500 rpm. Furthermore, the bike has a wet weight of 215 kg and a fuel tank capacity of 12-litre.

Suzuki has not stated anything about the launch date and pricing details of the upcoming bike. We can expect the Katana to arrive around the bike’s 40th anniversary next year.
