Yamaha first hybrid scooter is here, the Grand Filano

MANILA: A few weeks ago, Honda launched the PCX 125 hybrid scooter. It gathered rave reviews for being the only hybrid scooter in the world, the glory isn’t long-lived. Yamaha has now launched the Grand Filano hybrid scooter in Thailand for Thb 62,000, i.e. approx Php 99,471.

A single cylinder fuel injected Blue Core 125cc engine powers the Yamaha Grand Filano. It makes 8.2 PS of power and 9.7 Nm of torque. The engine is ably assisted by an electric motor. It is also called as Smart Motor Generator. Under slower moving conditions, the motor gives an extra boost to the vehicle, enabling it to move forward. Yamaha claims that this also saves fuel thereby helping the vehicle have higher fuel efficiency. As part of its Blue Core philosophy, Yamaha have also added an engine start-stop mechanism to the pack. It is switchable and one can leave it on or just put it in the off position. In traffic, the rider just has to apply the brake and come to a halt. The engine will shut off. Twist the throttle to just get moving again. This way, Yamaha says, the emissions will also be far lower.

Yamaha offers the Grand Filano in two trims - with ABS and standard without ABS. There is LED lighting at both the ends, keyless start, 27 litres of underseat storage, all-digital LCD meter, USB charging, and stowable rear footpegs. The seat height of the Grand Filano is 790 mm and the ground clearance is 135 mm. The length, width and height of the scooter is 1,820 mm x 685 mm x 1,145 mm. The wheelbase stands at 1,280 mm. The kerb weight of the non-ABS model is 99 kg whereas the ABS version is heavier by 3 kg. There is a disc brake at the front while a drum does duty at the rear. Yamaha uses telescopic front suspension for the Grand Filano while a monoshock is employed at the rear. The fuel tank capacity is 4.4 litres.
