Toyota GR86

Unlike the exterior, the interior of the Toyota GR 86 doesn’t reflect its sportscar appeal. The overall black-coloured layout for the cabin looks sporty with the contrasting red highlights, but the design of the elements and dashboard look quite plain for a sports car. 

While the three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel of the Toyota GR 86 looks place, the modern-looking full-TFT instrument console somehow manages to compensate for the plainness. The GR 86 is now featuring a standalone rectangular touchscreen infotainment system. Below it, the lower centre console comes with three-rounded dials for automatic climate control and toggle-like switches for various functions. The rectangular AC vents placed above the infotainment system look a bit outdated.

While the layout of the cabin of the Toyota GR 86 could have been better, it is decently equipped with modern features like heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and aluminium pedals. 

Compared to the previous-generation version, the new Toyota GR 86 looks sleeker and more mature. However, the smooth-looking two-door coupe stance hasn’t been compromised even in this new version, and with the changes brought on board, it only looks fresher than before. 

The Toyota GR 86 continues to have a minimalistic appeal at the front, which greets you with its large trapezoidal grille tapering edges and honeycomb mesh design. The smoothly-flowing curves on the bonnet and curvy headlamp housings for the all-LED headlamps with L-shaped daytime running LEDs further make the GR 86 look aerodynamic. The aggressiveness of the front profile is further ensured by sporty-looking L-shaped air curtains positioned on the corners of the front bumper. 

The side profile of the Toyota GR 86 has a very lovable two-door look, which along with the rounded coupe-like roofline, gives it a very sporty stance. In addition to the two-door profile, GR 86 also features angular air curtains located on the front fenders and 10-spoke black alloy wheels. There are smoothly-designed haunches above the front and rear fenders of GR 86.

The Toyota GR 86 comes with a hump-like spoiler integrated into its boot lid, which along with the C-shaped wide tail lamps and the connecting LED bar between them, adds some visual drama to the rear profile. Some more sportiness is further ensured by a large and wide black diffuser and dual exhaust ports on the rear bumper of GR 86. 

Continuing with its reputation of being an excellent handler, the Toyota GR 86 is one fine driver’s car. It gets Macpherson struts with a stabilizer at the front and multi-link suspension at the rear. The sportiness of this suspension combination gets even better with GR circuit-tuned coil springs. GR 86 also has a GR circuit-tuned electronic power steering, which feels super responsive while on the go.

The new Toyota GR 86 continues to source its power from the tried-and-tested 2.4-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated Boxer petrol engine. Claiming a maximum power output of 228 bhp and a peak torque output rated at 250 Nm, this powertrain is offered with both the choices of a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic.

The Toyota GR 86 comes with a comprehensive set of safety features, which includes blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, ABS with EBD and brake assist, vehicle stability control, traction control, seven airbags, automatic high beam, reverse camera, hill start assist, adaptive cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, lead vehicle start alert, pre-collision braking and lane departure warning with sway warning.

The Toyota GR 86 might not look as aggressive and modern as other sports cars on sale right now. However, what matters the most is the action under the hood, and GR 86 gets that in plenty.
