Ural Gear Up Sahara 750

The overall design of the Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 is a combination of two aspects – a retro motorcycle with an old-school design and a sidecar attached to its right. While many people attach a sidecar to their two-wheelers, the Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 offers the facility of a sidecar as a standard fitment. This combination gives it a unique identity of its own.

Let’s start by describing the motorcycle part first. There is nothing much to differentiate this aspect of Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 compared to other retro-themed motorcycles. It gets a rounded halogen headlamp at the front, which is assisted with a grill over it, a large and transparent windshield over it, curved body-coloured panels on its sides, and a curved high-placed fender below it. It also gets a single turn indicator on its left, as the right indicator is placed on the sidecar.

The side profile of the Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 also looks very conventional, with a rounded fuel tank with blacked-out logos, slim and flat side body panels, curved rear fender, and a long single-piece seat. The engine and spoke wheels are finished in a theme of black, while the single 2-into-1 exhaust pipe neatly flows in between the motorcycle and the sidecar to its right. The rear fender comes mounted with a halogen tail lamp and left-hand-side turn indicator. The single-pod rounded all-analogue instrument console with only a speedometer and odometer looks very basic for a motorcycle of its segment.

The sidecar of the Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 also needs a special mention here. With a large and curved look, this sidecar is good enough to accommodate a single full-sized adult. Behind the seat of the sidecar, there is a large cargo space, above which the spare wheel of the motorcycle is mounted. The sidecar also comes fitted with auxiliary lights at the front, right-hand side turn indicators of the motorcycle, and separate tail lamps at its back.

The Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 is armed with a unique suspension combination of IMZ leading link hydraulic forks at the front and a double-sided swing-arm with two 5-step adjustable Sachs hydraulic spring shock absorbers at the rear. The sidecar also comes equipped with a suspension unit of its own - a single-sided swing-arm with a single 5-step adjustable Sachs hydraulic spring shock absorber. The motorcycle rides on 19-inch spoke wheels shod with off-road spec Duro HF tyres. For braking, while the motorcycle part gets a single 295mm disc at the front and a single 256mm disc at the rear, the sidecar also comes fitted with a 245mm disc at its back. 

Powering the Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 is a fairly-sized four-stroke, air-cooled, Boxer flat-twin, 749cc engine, which is coupled to a 4-speed gearbox, which also gets a reverse gear in addition. With a maximum power output of 42 PS and a peak torque output of 57 Nm, this engine is one of the most underpowered middleweight engines available in the market right now. The engine refinement is also not up to the mark when you compare it with more modern motorcycles in the middleweight category.

While the Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 is devoid of modern safety features, it gets a very unique lockable compartment behind the seat in the sidecar. With a trunk capacity of 82 litres, it offers a safe and secure place to store your valuables while you are riding the Ural Gear Up Sahara 750.

With its practical sidecar and comfortable low-speed ride quality, the Ural Gear Up Sahara 750 comes across as a unique but attractive product, despite its shortcomings.
