MMDA to conduct info drive anew for e-bike users

MANILA: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) gave leeway on the prohibition of e-bicycles, e-tricycles, and other similar light vehicles on national roads.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How long is the latest information campaign on the prohibition of e-bicycles, e-tricycles, and other similar light vehicles on national roads?

The initiative will be until Sunday (May 26).
  • What will happen to those who have their arrested before?

The MMDA clarified that vehicles impounded last month during the first day of the implementation were released and violators do not need to pay the fines.
  • MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Romando Artes shard that the agency shall extend the information campaign for one week — a month after the grace period granted by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. lapsed last May 18.

Per Artes, on-ground MMDA personnel will still not issue citation tickets to drivers of e-bikes and e-trikes, as well as tricycles, pedicabs, pushcarts, and kuligligs who will use national, circumferential, and radial roads in the National Capital Region and shall just remind them that they are not allowed to use the said thoroughfares.

According to him, the sad move is part of the MMDA’s initiative to support the President’s call to have an educational campaign, especially for those affected.

“This one-week extension will allow owners and drivers of e-bikes, e-trikes, and other similar light vehicles to comply with either registration or getting a driver’s license,” he said.

The agency reiterated that absence of vehicle registration and license will result in the impoundment once the regulation will be implemented again by Monday next week.

Artes said that the local government units have conducted intensive information drives on the alternate routes.
