All-new Isuzu Elf features truck maker's first electric powertrain

MANILA: A full model change for a medium-duty truck is uncommon, therefore when one is introduced, it is significant. For instance, Isuzu just unveiled the all-new Elf, the first model to undergo a complete makeover in 17 years. Together with the diesel engines, it also offers an electric option. Even diesel experts are making investments in EVs, and Isuzu's first EV is the new-generation Elf.

As previously indicated, diesel engines are still available, but Isuzu made the 4JZ1-TCS engine its centerpiece. Launched a few years ago, the 4JZ1-TCS delivers 148hp and 375Nm of torque. It is allegedly the cleanest and most effective medium-duty diesel produced to date by Isuzu.

The 2023 Isuzu Elf also receives a thorough overhaul of the transmission. The first nine-speed dual-clutch transmission for medium-duty vehicles is now a choice. According to the manufacturer, this nine-speed transmission keeps the rpm low for fuel efficiency and reduces noise to lessen driver fatigue. The lower drivetrain losses of a dual-clutch system were another factor in Isuzu's decision.

Isuzu has not yet released the power and torque ratings for the 2023 Isuzu Elf's electric drivetrains. But, it did list the battery pack alternatives available for the truck. Basic models come with 40kWh, mid-range models have 60kWh, and heavy-duty variants have 100kWh. The Elf EV lineup includes models with conventional cabs that have GVWs under 3.5 tons and models with wide cabs that have GVWs up to 7.5 tons.
