4 reasons the Isuzu D-Max, mu-X are considerable rainy season rides

The rainy season brings a handful of challenges to many Filipinos. On that note, it is important for one to have a dependable ride that can make easy work of submerged potholes and flooded areas.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the water wading capability of the Isuzu D-Max and mu-X?

Both the Isuzu D-Max and mu-X has a water wading capability of 800 mm.
  • How high is the ground clearance of the Isuzu D-Max and mu-X?

The Isuzu D-Max clears the ground by 240 mm while the mu-X has a clearance of 235 mm.
  • Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) has shared four reasons why the D-Max pickup truck and the mu-X sport utility vehicle (SUV) are good picks for those looking to brave the wet weather.

“Both these models have a storied history of excellence on the road. The D-Max, introduced in 2003, has become a symbol of rugged dependability and innovation. Over the years, it has evolved to meet the demands of both urban and off-road driving, consistently proving its mettle in various conditions. Similarly, the mu-X, launched in 2014, has quickly gained a reputation for its robust performance and comfort, making it a favorite among SUV enthusiasts,” IPC wrote in a press release.

    High ground clearance

One of the advantages of driving a pickup truck or an SUV is enjoying a higher clearance from the ground.

The Isuzu D-Max comes out of the factory with a 240-millimeter (mm) ground clearance while the mu-X offers 235 mm. Compared to vehicles from other segments — like sedans and crossovers — the aforementioned products from IPC give owners more confidence when faced with flooded roads.

“While it is always advisable to avoid driving through floodwaters when possible, it's reassuring to know that Isuzu vehicles are built to handle such situations effectively,” the local arm of the Japanese carmaker said.

And while we’re on the topic of conquering floods…

    Water wading capability

The Isuzu D-Max and mu-X have been designed and engineered to wade through water up to a maximum height of 800 mm.

Per IPC, the said water wading capacity “ensures that the vehicle's engine and electrical components remain secure from water damage, allowing for safer passage through deep floodwaters.”

Should one wallow through water, IPC advises maintaining a slow and steady pace to minimize wave creation, thereby protecting both the vehicle and surrounding property.

    Flood-proof intake

The 2024 Isuzu D-Max is equipped with a redesigned air intake positioned at the top-front edge of the engine hood, aligned with all breather lines, and secured with rubber trim.

By strategically placing the air intake at the said position, Isuzu ensures that its SUV will get additional protection from water ingress. Those who plan to convert their vehicles into off-road rigs, the Isuzu D-Max has ample space on the left side of the engine bay to accommodate a snorkel — further enhancing the vehicle's flood-proof capabilities.

    Semi-midship engine design

The powerplant of the Isuzu D-Max boasts a semi-midship design, which balances the vehicle’s weight distribution and repositions the alternator inward, making it more difficult for water to reach.

“Keeping the alternator dry is crucial because water exposure can significantly affect the electrical system, leading to potential malfunctions and costly repairs. Combined with the vehicle's higher engine placement, this design consideration offers added protection when driving through flooded areas,” IPC noted.

While the Isuzu D-Max and mu-X are equipped to handle flooded conditions, IPC still recommends that drivers practice precautions. The company reminds drivers that flooded roads can conceal debris and sharp objects that may damage the vehicle, so it is crucial to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary risks.

“In the event that your vehicle does get flooded, Isuzu Philippines is here to help. Customers are encouraged to contact their nearest Isuzu dealership to book an appointment for inspection and service,” it concluded.
