American dreaming: Ford Territory vs. Chevrolet Tracker

The Territory and Tracker make themselves unique in the compact crossover class with their American Ford and Chevrolet badges. But the Territory and Tracker aren't about to rest on their brand cachet — both models bring novelties to the table that set them apart. 

The 2022 Territory being a hot-seller for Ford means that the vehicle makes a good first impression. The designers have grafted the Territory with a trapezoidal grille that's flanked by slim LED headlights, muscular wheel arches on the sides, and a wraparound-style windows that appears to flow around the rest of the car. 

As for the 2022 Tracker, it stylizes the crossover format with a bold trapezoid grille and sharp body creases. To make itself appear closely to a bonafide SUV, Chevrolet added to the Tracker black body cladding and roof rails. 

The lucrative market seeks high tech, and so the 2022 Territory and Tracker deliver on this front. 

Cabin and convenience features in the Territory include the following: a 10-inch fully digital display in the instrument panel with three selectable themes, steering column with tilt and telescopic adjustment, power windows with one-touch up and down function on all windows, cabin pollen and PM (particulate matter) 2.5 filter with activated carbon, ambient lighting with seven color options, heated and cooled front seats, 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, four-way manually-adjustable front passenger’s seat, wireless charging, and eight speakers.

The toys onboard the 2022 Tracker are almost as plentiful. There's an eight-inch Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system and six speakers, electric sliding panoramic sunroof, Bosch electric power steering wheel with audio controls, dual cockpit design, ergonomic dual-barrier sports instrument cluster, leather sports-style seats with red stitching, 60/40 split-folding rear seats plus 22 liters of pocket spaces. 

The Territory prioritizes safety with autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning, lane departure warning, enhanced active park assist with parallel and perpendicular parking assist, blind spot information system, front and rear parking sensors, and a high-definition 360-degree camera. And that's only a number among the Territory's wealth of safety kit. 

Among the 2022 Tracker's complement of active and passive safety technologies are front and rear disc brakes, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, emergency brake warning, rollover mitigation, enhanced understeer control, mini spare detection, cornering brake control, traction control system, engine drag control, panic brake assist, hill start assist. Like the Tracker's competitor, these are just among the array of safety equipment. 

In the performance area, the 2022 Territory and Tracker promise to provide performance and efficiency in equal measure.  

Under the hood is of the Territory is a turbocharged 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine, which sends 141hp and 225Nm of torque through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with Sport mode straight to its two front wheels. 

The Tracker is powered by a one-liter DOHC turbo engine that delivers 116hp and 175Nm of torque, which are sent to the front wheels by way of a CVT. The Tracker's engine packs an engine start/stop system that helps reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Fully adapting to different traffic conditions, the start/stop function automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is running at low speed or is stationary. When the driver's foot is off the brakes, the engine kicks in again. 

Didn't we say the Territory and Tracker offer more beyond the uniqueness of their American brands? In the spec sheets of their top-trip versions below — the Territory Titanium+ and Tracker LT Redline — that quality is bound to prove correct still.
