Best of both (Maxus) worlds: D60 vs. D90
The Maxus origin story contains many twists and turns. But the gist of it is, what was once a burgeoning British brand is now under the leadership of a competitive Chinese company.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How much is the Maxus D60?
The D60 retails for P1.24 to P1.338 million for its two variants, the Pro and Elite. How much is the Maxus D90?
The D90 is offered from P1.918 to P2.268 million, for the D90 Premium 4x2 and 4x4, respectively. This European and Asian influence is apparent within Maxus — especially on its D60 and D90 offerings. The Maxus D60 is compact-sized that offers a third row of seats, while the Maxus D90 is a mid-sizer with the proper exterior heft to accommodate seven.
To start with, the squared-off body shapes of these two SUVs call to mind those of Euro metal. The D60 and D90 took a minimalist leaf from the Western's design book, too, with reasonable amount of chrome and subtle creases that decorate the side profile.
It's at the D60 and D90's front and rear ends where the designers let their pencils loose. Matrix-style full LED headlights and a grille with a cobweb pattern dominate the D60's fascia. The rear is highlighted by an LED tail lamp bar, which stands below the Maxus inscription — perhaps another European design cue.
For the D90, its grille is equally as imposing as its smaller sibling's, but wears a less daring design. The cobweb pattern is swapped in favor of a mesh-black design, but the squinting headlights still remain. At the rear, the D90's horizontal tail lamps accentuate the hefty rear end.
Now, the Maxus D60 and D90's equipment list makes them in keeping with the usual tech-rich fare of Chinese vehicles.
The D60 comes standard with an eight-inch infotainment system and rear air-conditioning vents. The top-of-the-shop D60 variant provides additional convenience and comfort through the presence of power folding side mirrors, leather seats, and a keyless entry and push start.
There's even tech, too, in the form of passive and active safety systems. The D60 is equipped with rear park distance control (PDC), tire pressure monitoring, reverse camera, front dual and side airbags, electronic parking brake with auto hold, electronic stabilization program, and an additional front PDC for the D60 Elite variant.
In keeping with the vehicle's upscale positioning, the D90 comes equipped with a wealth of creature comforts. Among these amenities are a 12-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, eight speakers, keyless entry and push start, and cruise control.
The top-spec D90 adds to these features an eight-way power seat for the front passenger, a four-wheel drive system with all-terrain system with differential lock, and a power tailgate.
Aside from sensors front and rear and traction control, safety is provided by a roll movement intervention system, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, driver fatigue monitor, and tire pressure monitoring system.
With everything considered, it seems that the Maxus D60 and D90 combine the best of the Anglo-Sino worlds. And yet these two SUVs have their own strengths, too, as their spec sheets below will tell you.
