BMW iX1, iX2: similarities, differences

BMW Philippines recently launched the iX1 — the all-electric version of the X1 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) — and the iX2, bolstering its electric offerings to eight models, at the time of writing.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How much power does the BMW iX1 make?

The BMW iX1 makes 204 horses.
  • How much torque does the BMW iX2 produce?

The BMW iX2 generates some 250 Nm.
  • The two models also expand the upmarket models available to Filipino buyers with discerning tastes, as well as deep pockets. To help those eyeing the abovementioned, here’s a quick look at the similarities as well as the differences between the BMW iX1 and iX2.

    Similarities:

    Power

Both the BWM iX1 and iX2 are powered by the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, which puts a single electric motor alongside a single-speed automatic transmission fixed ratio system.

The two electric compact SUVs make 204 horsepower.

    Screens

BMW gave both the iX1 and iX2 models screens that combine both the instrument panel and the infotainment system.

According to SMC Asia Car Distributors Corporation — a distributor of BMW cars here in the country — the digital instrument clusters of the iX1 and iX2 are powered by the BMW Live Cockpit Plus system while the infotainment screens run on the iDrive Operating System 9.0.

In addition to seamless smartphone integration, would-be owners can enjoy immersive audio through the Harman Kardon-made high-fidelity sound system, which comes standard for both models.

    Safety

The BMW iX1 and iX2 are also neck and neck when it comes to safety.

Features shared by the two compact SUVs are airbags for the driver and the front passenger, head airbags for first- and second-row seats, side airbags for the driver and the front passenger, an anti-lock braking system, dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control, ISOFIX tethers, acoustic seatbelt warning, and speed-sensing door locks.

BMW also gives buyers a warning triangle as well as a tire repair kit.

    Differences:

    Looks

One can tell which vehicle is which from a glance.

To begin with, the BMW iX1 looks a lot like its internal combustion engine-equipped counterpart. At the fore, it wears a boxy iteration of the iconic kidney grille complemented by a robust chin. Likewise, the LED lights that adorn the fascia, as well as the wheel arches, have an identical squared-off design.

Under the aforementioned wheel wells are 18-inch, two-tone aerodynamic wheels. It also gets an automatic tailgate.

Rounding up its exterior appointments are the xLine package, the Exterior Line Satin Aluminum trim applied on the windows, and a keyless entry feature via the BMW Comfort Access System.

As for the BMW iX2, it offers a more sporty appearance that seems to make the compact SUV look more agile and athletic — after all, the carmaker dubs it a pure-bred Sports Activity Coupé.

On that note, it showcases a more angular take on the marque’s kidney grille with sharp-looking accents on its cheeks and on its chin. The LED lights that flank the latticework also have some slight angles to them.

Noticeable is its flowing roofline that blends seamlessly into the rear. Its sporty nature befits standard appointments including the M Sport package with the M High-Gloss Shadow Line package slapped on its windows.

    A set of 19-inch M double-spoke, two-tone wheels elevate its overall appeal.

Notably, the BMW iX2 also gets the marque’s Comfort Access System and an automatic tailgate system.

    Luxury

Inside, the BMW iX1 comes with a handful of luxurious trims.

Greeting occupants are Veganza Perforated upholstery with seats that can be electrically adjusted and come with memory features. As for the driver, he or she can enjoy the drive while holding onto a leather steering wheel with multi-functional buttons. Together with the front passenger, they can experience a more spirited drive thanks to sports seats that come as standard.

For added highlight, the BMW iX1 gets Interior trim finishers with aluminum Mesheffect.

On the other hand, the BMW iX2 gets seats swathed in a mix of Veganza and M Alcantara. Complementing the said hide is an M Leather steering wheel, which together with sports seats, amplifies the excitement when driving the all-electric compact SUV.

M Interior trim finishers with aluminum Hexacube round up the interior appointments of the BMW iX2.

    Torque

While the power figures for both the BMW iX1 and iX2 are the same, they vary when it comes to pulling power.

The former produces 247 Newton-meters (Nm) while the latter makes 250 Nm.

    Range

Both electric compact SUVs also offer varied range capabilities. The beefier BMW iX1 can run from 430-473 kilometers (km) on a single charge while the more athletic iX2 runs from 439-478 km.
