Brother from another Mother: Nissan Livina vs. Mitsubishi Xpander Comparo
No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you — the 2022 Nissan Livina really looks like a photo-copy result of the current Mitsubishi Xpander because, well, that’s what it is.

Pricing ranges from P1.05 million to P1.180 million across its four variants. What are the differences between the Nissan Livina and Mitsubishi Xpander?
The Nissan Livina wears the brand's signature V-shaped exterior details and features leather seats and brown fabric interior options. The Xpander now has Brake Auto Hold and cruise control, among other features. In case you don’t know, Nissan and Mitsubishi are partners in the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, with the two Japanese carmakers sitting under the same umbrella as the French company. By working together to develop engines and other crucial components, it’s believed the three automakers want to improve economies of scale through the Alliance and accelerate the time it takes to commercialize new cars.
And so in making the Livina, Nissan took a Mitsubishi Xpander, tweaked its styling to fit the brand’s design language, and gave it several features not found in the compact MPV launched a couple of years ago. What Nissan left unchanged, though, is the Xpander’s running gear. So now we’re given two family-friendly vehicles that are identical inside and slightly similar outside, but with essentially different names. It’s a case of po-tay-to po-tah-to.
But why should Nissan change the Xpander’s formula that proved to be successful in terms of sales?
The 2022 Nissan Livina wears its unique styling character elements, starting with the V-Motion grille bordered by a chrome detail that’s, well, shaped like the letter V. Like the vehicle it’s based on, the 2022 Nissan Livina’s rectangular headlamps sit under LED daytime running lights. the LED front under spoiler, the brand’s signature LED tail lamps, and daytime running lights.
The 2022 Mitsubishi Xpander's front embraces a more horizontal form thanks to the addition of three-dimensional skid protectors. The newly installed black metallic radiator grille is noticeable, as is the headlight's familiar T-shape with redesigned LED daytime running lights (DRL) and turn signals.
Going around the Nissan Livina, particularly its top-trim form, you’d notice that its front under spoiler, side running boards, and rear bumper are applied with silver details. Underneath all these are 16-inch silver alloy wheels. At the rear, the Xpander’s T-Shaped tail lights are given the V-shape LED touch that’s signature to Nissan models.
As the Mitsubishi Xpander wants to have an SUV image, it’s given new 17-inch wheels and side sill garnish as part of a midlife update. With the addition of uniform T-shaped tail lights to the bumper that’s been reshaped more angularly than before, the rear also displays an improved appearance.
Inside the top-of-the-line 2022 Nissan Livina VL, its leather seats distinguish this MPV from its twin sibling, as are the brown fabric seats in lower Livina variants. The Livina VL also comes with a Keyless Entry System and push button engine start and stop system. Standard fitment across the range are dial-type air conditioning systems, a seven-inch touchscreen display with an audio and handsfree phone control, multiple charging and connectivity ports console, 12 cup holders, and storage compartments around the interior.
Accents on the 2022 Mitsubishi Xpander’s fabric seats, which are also made of plush padding materials with actual stitches, complement the electronic parking brake (exclusive to the Xpander GLS).
Thanks to the parking brake button, the cup holders on the console have been rearranged to be sideways and have a bigger circle. All of these are done to improve organization and make the most use of available space within the 2022 Xpander.
In addition to sporting a more contemporary style, the tilt and telescopic steering wheel has been redesigned with a compact center to improve grip. A new meter cluster and dynamic opening image takes its place behind the steering wheel.
Since these are family haulers, Nissan and Mitsubishi said the Livina’s and Xpander’s cabin offers generous space when the second- and third-row seats are in full capacity, and when these seats are folded to accommodate cargo.
At the back of the Xpander, rear USB ports in the second row now have one Type-A and one Type-C charger incorporated on the console's back. Additionally, there are now more enticing colors on the rear A/C dial and louver, and cup holders have been added to the seat armrest. All of these improve overall cabin ergonomics.
When the third-row is folded, the 2022 Mitsubishi Xpander’s cargo deck is flat with no gaps or protruding parts. It's now simpler to transport bikes, potted plants, or even furniture as needed.
Like we said, the Livina and Xpander are so similar, they share engine and transmission options. The MPVs are powered by a 1.5-liter engine with 103 horsepower and 141Nm of torque, and depending on variants, the engines are mated to a four-speed automatic and five-speed manual transmissions.
Maybe you can spot more differences between the two. Below, the spec sheets of the upper trim levels of the Livina and Xpander can help you do so.
