Meet the newcomer: Spec-checking the Geely Emgrand

The recently unveiled Emgrand is Geely's fourth model since the brand made its debut in the country in 2019. It  is Geely's first and newest sedan in the Philippines, and it was designed to encourage more Filipinos to "Be Driven" in their lives.

The Emgrand is built on the Geely Auto Group's B-segment Modular Architecture. This platform is also used for the Coolray, and it is designed to meet or surpass all five-star NCAP criteria. Due to BMA's over five million kilometers of test mileage, the Emgrand is expected to have better reliability and longer lifespan. It also takes advantage of the BMA's wide body to provide more room and enhance riding comfort and stability.

Under the Emgrand’s hood is a 1.5-liter dual continuous variable valve timing, naturally aspirated engine that churns out 102hp and 142Nm of torque. The engine's all-aluminum alloy cylinder block makes it lightweight. For low maintenance and high durability, it features a timing chain. It is mated with an eight-speed continuously variable transmission (CVT) for improved acceleration, decreased shift shocks, and high responsiveness.

The B-segment sedan's wide body, low-lying style was based on a new design concept of "polar light and shadow aesthetics," and Geely designers chose the new "Energy Pulse'' radiator grille to complement the car's luxurious aspect. The Emgrand has projector LED headlamps as well as LED daytime running lights with welcome lights and a "follow me home" feature. It also comes with an auto-on feature that switches on the headlights when the lighting conditions become dimmer. The car's rear end is enhanced with crisp, rhythmic taillights. When the car is locked or unlocked, the rear combination lamps' 190 LED bulbs produce three different light patterns.

The memory foam seats on the inside are wrapped in a blend of light premium suede and sustainable imitation leather. The dashboard and door panels are composed of plush and soft cladding materials rather than hard plastic. Even if the car is running in direct sunlight, the steering wheel does not get hot as it is covered in a constant-temperature leather material. With sufficient seating and headroom to comfortably accommodate three adults, Emgrand ensures a pleasant journey for all passengers. There are also lots of storage spaces, including a trunk with a capacity of 500 liters. Additionally, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) are reduced to a minimum, reportedly even lower than luxury European models, allowing occupants to enjoy a quieter and more relaxing ride.

The Emgrand also features an Intelligent Scene Air-conditioning System that deodorizes and keeps the air clean at all times. This is very useful when getting into the car after being under direct sunlight for a long time, not using the car for an extended period of time, or just starting the car in the morning after stuffed air has been trapped overnight. The air-conditioning system also comes with a CN95 filter, ensuring that the air entering the cabin is free from viruses and germs.

To ensure the safety of every occupant, the Emgrand comes with anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), electronic stability program, traction control, hill hold control, electronic parking brake with autohold, six airbags, three ultrasonic reversing radars, high-definition wide angle reverse camera, real-time temperature and pressure tire monitoring system, and rear intelligent monitoring system.

The Emgrand is also equipped with a 12.3-inch digital meter with a 3D interface and a high-definition display that shows relevant driving information. It also comes with an eight-inch high-definition central screen where the driver can manage entertainment and other vehicle functions such as toggling between Eco, Comfort, and Sport driving modes, opening and closing the sunroof, and activating other smart aircon features.

The Emgrand is currently available in two variants: Premium and Comfort. The lower-spec Emgrand S variant will be rolled at a later date.
