Geely Okavango Review 2024
Abhishek Katariya says
Geely, the Chinese automotive marque, properly known as part of the Geely Automotive International Corporation (GAIC), started its way in 1986. The company is one of China's top 10 vehicle manufacturers and was named the most innovative corporation in the country. Since its first release in 1988, the brand continued to reach new heights and rose to prominence as a scientific and technological leader. Later in 2009, Geely made its way on the Russian market.
With the acquisition of Western companies and collaboration with foreign technology innovation corporations, the carmaker kept on developing its production, broadening its range, and enhancing product quality. The Geely Holding Group holds four big companies: GAIC, Volvo Car Corporation, Drivetrain Systems International (DSI), and London Taxi.
One recent model to join the Geely Philippines is the Geely Okavango — this vehicle is the third model to enter the brand’s local lineup. In China, this vehicle is referred to as an SUV by the brand. However, its impression states the opposite, thanks to its boxy design and dimensions. For that reason, Geely Philippines used the term ‘Wonderfully Distinct,’ as they could not correctly determine which is which. It reached the local shores back on November 19, 2020. The Okavango captured the attention of many upon its launch, even so upon its arrival here in the Philippines.

Geely Okavango Interior & Features
The automaker did a decent job of designing the interior cabin that comes in a modern and unique look. A plethora of features coupled with an all-black cabin came together in making the insides all aesthetically pleasing, not to mention a premium feel, a spacious and comfortable cabin in all three rows. The automaker also made sure to incorporate materials that are equivalent to those used by European brands.
Stepping inside, you will be greeted with design blueprints similar to the Coolray and Azkarra. Silver highlights accentuate the piano-black dashboard and door sidings. In addition, the transmission lever and drive mode selector are housed in a nearly horizontal middle tube. A rectangular widescreen TFT instrument console with several colored displays, as well as butterfly wing-inspired AC vents in the center console, are included.
The entry-level variant, Comfort, is equipped with fabric upholstery, while the top-spec variant, Urban, is cladded with leather seats. Additional features for the base variant include manual adjustability for the driver and front passenger.
Comfort & Entertainment
In contrast, the range-topper is decked with power-operated seat adjustment for both driver and front passenger. Other features include a tachometer, electronic multi-tripmeter, digital clock, digital odometer, and driving experience control eco.
The automaker made sure to deck the Okavango with modern functionalities that its occupants would surely appreciate for added comfort and entertainment. Passengers would enjoy connecting their smartphones through standard features like QDLink, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity that also comes with a 10.25-inch infotainment system. To boot, the higher variants come with a reverse camera.
Okavango Exterior
Similar sentiments can be shared concerning the exterior design of the Geely Okavango. The front fascia flaunts an individualistic and aggressive look. The automaker incorporated a wide signature ‘Cosmic Recall’ front grille flanked by angular LED headlamps with fog lamps encased by a trapezoidal housing. The top-of-the-line spec also has auto headlamp controls. The side profile feature sharp lines accentuated with distinctive fender flares that, in turn, add a robust persona to the Okavango. To boot, it has a tailgate-mounted spoiler, shark-fin antenna, and a bulky bumper. The rear, on the other hand, has a rather toned-down look compared to the rest. The taillights have curved outside borders and streamlined inner edges, with chrome highlights in the center.
The Geely Okavango measures 4,835 mm long, 1,900 mm wide, and 1,785 mm tall, with a ground clearance of 194 mm; and a wheelbase of 2,815 mm. The higher-end models come with 18-inch 225/55/R18 tires. This vehicle is up for grabs in four colors: Storm Grey, Porcelain White, Luna Silver, and Marble Black.
Passenger & Bootspace
The Geely Okavango can seat up to seven passengers, including the driver. The Geely Okavango offers a generous amount of head and legroom space, even in the third row. Some of the features that entice individuals to purchase this vehicle include a spacious cabin that can support and provide comfort to a large number of passengers and the opportunity to use considerable luggage space of 257-liters. For a large household, this is an excellent means for family getaways. Those to occupy the second and third rows will also enjoy the comforts of this vehicle.
Geely Okavango Ride & Handling
The Geely Okavango renders a smooth driving experience both on the highways and on rough terrains. It gives a powerful drive-feel since it is built to be solid and grounded even at higher speeds. This vehicle is more than meets the eye and offers more than the bare minimum; thanks to its unibody chassis, it boasts a quiet performance as well as decent behavior on rough roads. Apart from that, there are no issues with Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) in any of the variants.
The front suspension system includes MacPherson struts with coil springs, while the rear gets a multi-link setup. Users can attest to why most Filipinos opt for this vehicle as its suspension system allows for a more comfortable experience even while driving on rugged roads.
Okavango Engine & Fuel Consumption
The Geely Okavango makes use of the Geely NL platform wherein it is designed to fulfill today’s modern demands for smart driving and alternative energy sources. In addition, cars utilizing this platform meet the highest government standards, earning them the title of “safety standard.” This vehicle also rides on the same engine as the smaller Azkarra, which houses a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine mated to the 48-volt hybrid system that could be seen in the top-spec variant of the Azkarra. To boot, the carmaker decked the Comfort variant a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox for the Urban variant. This vehicle can churn a power output of 190 horsepower and a torque of 300 Nm.
The “Wonderfully Distinct” vehicle is available in three variants — Comfort, Urban, and Urban Plus.
Fuel Consumption
This vehicle also uses the same 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine as the smaller Azkarra, which is connected to the 48-volt hybrid system used in the top-spec edition of the Azkarra. Furthermore, the manufacturer equipped the Comfort model with a 6-speed manual transmission and the Urban variant with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This vehicle is capable of producing 190 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. According to reports, the Okavango can achieve 8.6 km/l in Comfort drive mode at a speed of 20 km/hr and 15.5 km/l at a speed of 90 km/hr.
Geely Okavango Braking & Safety
The Okavango comes with vented disc brakes in the front and solid disc brakes in the rear. It also makes use of a CN95 cabin filter which functions as a filter to keep particles, dust, aerosols, and viral hosts with diameters greater than 0.3 microns out of the cabin.
As per usual, the higher variants are decked with more safety features. This includes additional front, side, and curtain airbags. On the other hand, the standard features include dual front airbags, ISOFIX mounts for the middle row, hill-descent control, hill-start assist, and electronic stability control. Also, there is a 360-degree panoramic camera and three driving modes, namely Eco, Normal, and Sport.
