KEY TAKEAWAYS
What are some of the scary places to drive in the Philippines?
Some local places motorists find spooky include Balete Drive in Quezon City and Loakan Road in Baguio. How can drivers prevent accidents on the road?
While it is not exactly possible to stop accidents from happening, checking the vehicle and oneself before driving can help lessen the chances of untoward incidents. In light of the upcoming All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day, we have listed some of the scariest places to drive here in the Philippines.
Balete Drive, Quezon City
Let’s start with the popular Balete Drive in Quezon City.
It has gained notoriety in the 90s for sightings of a specter commonly called the “white lady.” Our titos back then shared stories of the said apparition spotted along the road and sometimes — sharing a seat with the passengers whose vehicles pass by the said thoroughfare.
Legend has it that the white lady is the ghost of a teenage girl who was run over by a taxi driver. The balete tree’s connection to supernatural occurrences — which was abundant in the area — also helped cement the location’s spooky reputation.
Manila Film Center, Pasay
The Manila Film Center in Pasay has been linked to scary stories due to its dark history.
Sometime in 1981 — before the building could see its completion — a tragedy occurred, which led to the demise of over 150 construction workers. Stories say that the dead were never retrieved as the scaffolding that they were working on collapsed, burying them in quick-drying cement.
It is said that despite the accident, construction of the Manila Film Center quickly resumed.
The ghosts of those who suffered the catastrophe are said to haunt the place.
I remember that when I was young, my dad took me to the Manila Film Center using an owner-type jeep. While we did not spot any scary apparitions, the vibe of the dilapidated building gave me the creeps.
Concha Cruz Drive, BF Homes Paranaque
Those who live in Paranaque know very well the legend of Concha Cruz Drive.
Stories told by drivers and enthusiasts tell the tale of a ghost car with a dead couple in the front seat. It is said that the two are the phantom of a couple who died in a street race and appears to warn young folks of the dangers of drag racing.
The area was a hotspot for non-professional racing back in the 80s.
Loakan Road, Baguio
Loakan Road in Baguio is also a notable location where people have experienced some sort of supernatural sighting. Apparently, a white lady also haunts the said area.
Local lore says that a woman was abused and later killed in this street. Her spirit was said to have taken refuge in a pine tree.
Even without hearing the woman’s tale, driving here at night could give anyone goosebumps due to the copious amounts of pine trees that seem to cover the landscape. Further, the dim road — which could become foggy at times — can make one feel like driving in Silent Hill.
Malinta Tunnel, Corregidor Island
The old Malinta Tunnel is said to be a commonplace for paranormal sightings.
Corregidor, where the tunnel system is located, is notable for being a hotspot for ghost sightings. The area served as an old fortress during the Second World War and the spirits of those who have suffered the conflict haunt the place.
Final thoughts
While it is not uncommon to encounter spooky things on the road, it is important to take note that figuring in vehicular accidents can be a more frightening experience.
During the Halloween break, we urge car owners to inspect their vehicles before they hit the road. Take extra caution when going on long trips and avoid sitting behind the wheel when under the influence of substances.
