Subaru BRZ: A track-day vibe in every drive
Subaru may now be more popularly known for its sports utility vehicle (SUV) lineup, but people should remember it also crafted a lightweight sports car (with Toyota) that has won a lot of raves.
The Subaru BRZ is the only coupe in the brand’s entire lineup, and is engineered with various sports car elements including a low center of gravity, feather-lightness, responsive steering, and a driver-friendly cockpit so you can experience a sporty feel even while driving around the city.
Even as we wait for the all-new generation of the BRZ to reach the country, it's still a good idea to consider the current model.
It carries a sophisticated presence as it is designed for both a sporty look and dynamic performance. The BRZ measures 4,240mm long, 1,775mm wide, and 1,320mm tall. It comes with a set of 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a 10-spoke design that gives the vehicle a more elegant and sportier look. It is also equipped with an aluminum-alloy spoiler that directs the airflow and increases downforce for more control and stability at speed. For improved visibility, the BRZ uses LED automatic headlamps with washers, daytime running lights, tail lamps, and fog lamps.
On the inside, the BRZ is upholstered with posh leather seats that boost the elegance of the sports car. The cockpit features a multi-information display that shows relevant vehicle information including engine data, stopwatch, and G-monitor. You can stream music inside the car through the 1.4-DIN audio system with six speakers, CD player, USB port, and auxiliary input jack. The cabin also comes with a center tray, cup holders, bottle holders, door pockets, and 12-volt power outlets in central console and glove box. The car’s trunk space can also accommodate up to 218 liters of cargo.
The BRZ is motivated by 2.0-liter DOHC Boxer engine that lies 460mm above the ground. To deliver balance, control, and better handling, the powertrain is designed flat for the lowest center of gravity. It generates a power output of 200ps at 7,000 rpm and a torque of 205Nm at 6,400 to 6,600 rpm. The BRZ’s powerful engine allows the vehicle to travel to a top speed of 226kph. The BRZ is the only rear-wheel drive vehicle in the Subaru lineup.
The BRZ is built with a lightweight body and rigid chassis to provide a comfortable ride, better steering responsiveness, and stability. To achieve a truly sporty driving experience, the vehicle’s weight is fairly distributed over the front and rear axles. For better control on tracks, the BRZ comes with a fully independent suspension system with MacPherson-type struts up front and a double-wishbone design on the rear.
To guarantee that every occupant is safe and well-protected inside the cabin, the BRZ is equipped with supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbags on the front, front side, curtain, and driver’s knee. Its front seatbelts come with pretensioners and load limiters, while on the rear, it is equipped with three-point seatbelts for two seating positions. For added protection, the BRZ also comes with other safety and security features including anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), brake assist system, brake override, Isofix child seat anchors with tether anchors, and engine immobilizer.
