1.2 million km of testing by 2020 Land Rover Defender
MANILA: The anticipation for the upcoming 2020 Land Rover Defender is creeping towards some heights. Land Rover, on the other hand, has been enjoying playing with our anxiety time and time again. With the introduction of the SUV inching closer with the passage of time, Land Rover has announced that the 2020 Defender will undergo the final phase of its testing in conjunction with the Tusk Trust.
To familiarise you all with Tusk Trust, it is a British non-profit organisation that was set up in 1990 in order to protect African wildlife including African elephants. Land Rover has been a proud partner of the organisation from the last 15 years. The off-roader will be clothed with camouflage and tested out at the Borana Conservancy.
In the 14,000-hectare reserve, the 2020 Land Rover Defender will perform various tasks including wading rivers, carrying packs & supplies, and towing substantial loads. Interestingly, the all-new Defender will undergo in excess of 45,000 different tests before it makes its way out in the world, and that too in some of the Earth’s most difficult conditions.
The testament of the capabilities of this new Defender is the tests that it has passed in regions with temperatures as high as 50-degrees and as low as -40-degrees. If that was not enough, the engineers behind the development of the upcoming Defender took it to places at an altitude of 10,000-ft.
“In addition to the extensive simulation and rig testing, we’ve driven new Defender 1.2 million kilometres across all terrains and in extreme climates to ensure that it is the toughest and most capable Land Rover ever made.
The incredible opportunity to put it to the test in the field, supporting operations at the Borana Conservancy in Kenya, with Tusk, will allow our engineers to verify that we are meeting this target as we enter the final phase of our development program”, said Nick Rogers, Executive Director Product Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover.
While the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender has been designed and developed in Gaydon, UK, Land Rover has set up a new production line in Nitra, Slovakia for the creation of the new Defender. The 4x4 is sure to become the best 4x4 on the planet as it has already tasted pretty much all of the difficult environments on Earth during its testing that a vehicle might not face even in its multiple generations.
