2019 Mitsubishi Montero Sport - What’s new?
Launched earlier this month, the new 2019 Mitsubishi Montero is indeed a good makeover over the previous model. Mitsubishi carefully decided what new features and elements to add in the 2019 year model to make the SUV more appealing without losing out its originality. So what exactly is new in the 2019 Mitsubishi Montero Sport? Read on to find out.
Exterior changes
New front fascia
You must be familiar with Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design language. Taking that forward, Mitsubishi has given the 2019 Montero Sport a revised front fascia by providing a pair of additional lighting units. So now, the new Montero Sport looks very much similar to the Mitsubishi Xpander and Mitsubishi Strada.
There are slight changes done to the headlights as well as the front grille which give the new midsize SUV a more masculine and aggressive look.
Redesigned alloy wheels
Unlike before, the new model gets a set of redesigned alloy wheels. They now have 6-spokes and look much better than before. However, they continue to come in the same 18-in size.
Rear spoiler
The rear end of the new Montero Sport gets an additional roof-mounted spoiler. Of course, it isn’t going to do much when it comes to the performance part of the discussion but it surely does look cool and we think no one would mind having it up there.
Revised tail lamps
Talking about the rear end, remember the teardrop design tail lamps that used to take up a lot of real estate in the previous model of the Montero Sport? Well, Mitsubishi too found them to be a bit overdone and thankfully decided to cut them short.
So previously, these lights used to run all the way down to the bottom of the tailgate but now, in the new 2019 Montero Sport, they end up well above. We do like these more. What do you guys think?
Automated tailgate
Considering the size of the Montero Sport and its price, we think that Mitsubishi made the right decision of including an automated tailgate in the 2019 model. This isn’t just a convenient feature, it also falls in the category of premium features.
Also, it comes with a hands-free function. So all you have to do is just move your leg across one of the sensors placed under the rear bumper and the tailgate will open automatically.
Interior changes
OEM head unit
Go through the 2019 Mitsubishi Montero specs sheet and you would find that the changes aren’t just limited to the outside. The small touch screen head unit in the old model has been replaced by a new OEM unit that supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity options. Mitsubishi also worked upon the software front to make the user interface as minimalistic as possible.
LCD instrument cluster
Another thing Mitsubishi has replaced is the analogue instrument cluster. The latest model comes equipped with a large 8-in TFT LCD instrument panel which looks so much better. It also adds a bit of premium-ness inside the SUV’s cabin. And it can also be customised to some extent as per the driver’s needs.
Additional power outlet
There is now an additional power outlet provided along with the already available USB charging ports for the second-row passengers. So you can even charge your laptops etc.
New safety features
Making the Montero Sport a much safer vehicle to be in, Mitsubishi added two new safety features in the 2019 model - lane-change assist (LCA) and rear-cross traffic alert (RCTA). Apart from these, the SUV continues to come with its previous safety features like-
- 7 airbags
- ABS with EBD
- Hill start assist
- Hill descent control
- Blind spot warning
- Forward collision mitigation
So these were the key new features that Mitsubishi has added in the 2019 Montero Sport. However, under the hood, it is the same SUV as before. It continues to draw power from the 2.4-litre diesel mill that produces 181 PS and 430 Nm and comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Engine type | 2.4-litre turbo diesel with DOHC |
Number of cylinders | 4 |
Number of valves | 16 (4 valves per cylinder) |
Max power output | 181 PS at 3500 rpm |
Max torque output | 430 Nm at 2500 rpm |

Another thing that you should know about the 2019 Mitsubishi Montero Sport is that for now, it is available only in two variants - GLS 2WD AT and GT 2WD AT - and both of them come with the automatic transmission and none of them gets AWD. Mitsubishi is expected to bring more variants next year.
