2020 Isuzu D-Max: Unveiling the third-generation Isuzu pickup
MANILA: After having a good 8-year run, the second-generation Isuzu D-Max will finally retire to pave the way for the all-new, third-generation model. Loaded with lots of techs, the 2020 Isuzu D-Max will be one of the most advanced utility vehicles in its class. Recently launched in Bangkok, Thailand, the unveiling showed the next generation Isuzu D-Max completely redesigned—inside and out.
One of the more significant changes is seen under the hood. The 3.0L, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine is a big boost over the current model’s 130kW/430Nm output to 140kW/450Nm. The increase in maximum power puts the 2020 D-Max model on top with other prominent pickup trucs like Toyota HiLux 130kW/450Nm, Ford Ranger 2.0TT 157kW/500Nm, Nissan Navara 140kW/450Nm, and Mitsubishi Triton 133kW/430Nm.
In terms of size, the new D-Max has grown taller, longer, and wider. The wheelbase alone is at 3,125mm, a 30mm increase from its predecessor. Isuzu boasts that the body is also more rigid by up to 23 percent. Body styles still come in three variants—the standard, extra, and double cab.
For those looking to take the new D-Max off-road, expect the 4WD models to have a rear differential lock, and wading ability by up to 800 mm, an increase of 200 mm from the prior model. This puts the D-max at par with Ford Ranger and Mazda BT-50. Any deeper and this utility vehicle will start to float. Other off-road features include hill descent control and hill start assist.
The interior has been redesigned to be more modern and luxurious with a wide variety of techs and added convenience items depending on the model. The fascia now comes with a 4.2” digital dash display, including a digital speedometer. The infotainment system has a center-mounted 9” touchscreen at the dash with Apple Car Play, and Android Auto partnered with an eight-speaker surround-sound audio system for top-of-the-line models.
Other features of the new 2020 Isuzu D-Max include perforated leather sports seats, dual-zone air-conditioning with rear air vents, UV-protection windscreen, “wet” wipers with rain sensors, one-touch three-flash indicators, dusk-sensing headlights, and height-and-reach adjustable steering. Safety systems added to the new Isuzu pickup model includes a parking sensor, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind zone warning.
