2020 Mazda CX-9 is here – more features, higher price
MANILA: Since its initial release in 2016, Mazda has made a few changes on the CX-9. The midsize crossover SUV lives up to tradition and gets an annual update. While not a complete redesign, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 provides better performance, an improved cabin, and a bevy of new features.
Its powertrain has been adjusted to deliver more torque than the previous generation. From 310 Nm, the 2.5L turbocharged SKYACTIV-G engine now has a peak torque of 323.6 Nm when running on 93 octane fuel. Mazda's i-ACTIV all-wheel drive, which was a standard for top-of-the-line Mazda CX-9 Signature, will now be offered as an option for other variants.
A smarter off-road traction assist button takes the place of the traction control button. It's supposed to help drivers through rough terrains. When the diagonal wheels lose traction, the feature keeps the engine from losing torque and increases the brake force on wheels.
"This transfers power to the wheels still on the ground to help allow the vehicle to regain traction and continue the drive," Mazda explains.
Specs which used to be limited to pricier models have also become a standard across the line-up. The base Mazda CX-9 Sport trim will get the same automated high beams, power driver's seat, heated front seats, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated outside mirrors as higher-end variants.
Following the footsteps of Toyota Vios and Honda Brio, Mazda equips the CX-9 with its full-range of i-ACTIVSENSE safety tools. These include lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and several driving assist features.
The crossover SUV also gains a more premium touch this 2020. All variants will feature the new key fob design of Mazda 3. However, only Mazda CX-9 Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature are getting captain's chairs for the second-row seats – with the last two having heated seats.
Naturally, these updates don't come without a price. The 2020 Mazda CX-9 will have a starting price of USD 34,835 in the North American market or roughly Php 1.8 million. Last year, the midsized crossover had a base price of USD 33,325 or about Php 1.67 million.
Mazda Philippines has not released any statement on its availability in the country. Currently, there are only two variants sold locally – Sport Touring FWD and Signature Series AWD. Hopefully, we’ll see entry-level variants of the 2020 Mazda CX-9 in local markets sometime next year.
