2024 Kia Sorento gets tougher look, new tech

MANILA: Kia unveiled the 2024 Sorento at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Thursday.

With cutting-edge features borrowed from the EV9, the new Sorento combines advanced technology with its assertive, rugged look.

The sport utility vehicle is designed based on Kia's “Opposites United” philosophy with the concept of “Bold for Nature.” The front hood and squared edges are evocative of the highly acclaimed Telluride. The Sorento also features the constellation-inspired Star Map lighting elements in the front and rear for a futuristic touch. Wider skid plates are integrated on the front and rear bumpers for a more aggressive impression.

Inside, the Sorento has a minimalist yet modern aesthetic that creates a sense of openness. It features the ultramodern Connected Car Navigation Cockpit, which was first seen on the EV9. It is equipped with a panoramic panel with 4.3-inch thin film transistor display and 12.3-inch screen, but customers may opt for a panoramic curved display that integrates dual 12.3-inch screens. Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto are standard.

The LX and S models of the 2024 Sorento are powered by a 2.5-liter I-4 GDI engine that churns out 191 horsepower (hp) and 246 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

A turbocharged version drives the higher trims like the X-Line and X-Pro, producing 281 hp and 421 Nm of torque. It is paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

The new Sorento also come standard with 10 advanced driver assistance systems, including forward collision-avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, and smart cruise control-machine learning.

“The Sorento continues to be a key player in the success of our capable SUV lineup… With Kia’s latest tech and design refinements, we are confident the Sorento will not just lead the segment, but blaze ahead of it,” Kia America Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President Steven Center stated.

Kia also announced that they will release hybrid and plug-in hybrid models of the Sorento next year.
