340,000 units of Porsche Panamera and Cayenne recalled
MANILA: Due to a problem in the automatic transmission on the Panamera and Cayenne, Porsche has recalled around 340,000 units of the two models around the globe. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released a document stating that there are fragile transmission bushings that can detach and, as a result, separate the gear shifter and the transmission itself. This can also cause the vehicle to roll away. This happens especially when the user puts his/her car in “Park” mode.
Because of the faulty parts in the automatic transmission, the car doesn’t actually go into the “Park” mode and can roll away and hit nearby people, cars, or objects. Porsche came to know about the issue when customers reported for a non-functioning “Park” mode that wasn’t able to hold the car in a standstill position. The customers always had to apply the parking brake in order to keep their car put.
The US is the most affected market with around 99,665 units running on the roads with faulty parts. Germany is the second most affected market with around 25,000 units of the two Porsche cars. The remaining 215,335 units are from various countries across the planet. Moreover, the faulty transmission is said to be a part of the models produced from 2002 to 2016. Porsche will start replacing the faulty parts in the US starting from August 11, 2019. As always, the replacements will be done at no cost.
In the Philippines, there hasn’t been an official statement released by PGA Cars Inc. yet. However, with more than 300,000 units being affected, we are certain that there are some Porsche Panameras and Cayennes running on the Philippine roads with a faulty transmission. Until they are called by their respective dealers, Porsche has suggested the customers who own a Panamera or a Cayenne to keep using the hand brake in order to keep the car at the halt and prevent a roll away.
