40 motorists fined for occupying bicycle lane
MANILA: Just a day after firing a warning to drivers, the PNP-HPG (Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group) catch 40 motorists in violation of the bicycle lane policy.
Citation tickets were issued to each motorist for illegally parking on the bicycle lane.
“This should serve as a lesson and a warning for the motorists to respect the spaces intended for bicycle riders. This operation will continue until we are able to institute discipline among the motorists that bicycle lanes are for bicycle riders and they have no business using them as parking or encroach in these lanes to overtake or to avoid traffic jams,” said Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, commander of the JTF CV Shield (Joint Task Force COVID Shield).
Members of the PNP-HPG initially caught 21 motorists along Quezon Avenue near EDSA (Epifanio de los Santos) in Quezon City on Tuesday and 19 more on Wednesday morning in the same location.
We will continue this operation not only to discipline motorists but also to protect our bicycle riders,” said Brig. Gen. Eliseo Cruz, PNP-HPG director.
To recall, Lt. Gen. Eleazar directed local police commanders early this week to conduct clearing operations in areas designated as bicycle lanes and to ensure that they remain clear of vehicles and other obstructions.
Other LGUs (local government units are taking Quezon City, Pasig, and Taguig’s cue, and are already planning to put up bicycle lanes that will interconnect with surrounding cities.
