All-new Chevrolet Onix based on the GEM platform officially unveiled

MANILA: Not a week has passed since the pre-announcement of the new Chevrolet Onix, and the car is now officially unveiled. Back in October 2018, the Onix (sold as the Chevrolet Prisma in Brazil) had been reported to cross the one million units manufacturing milestone in Brazil. Now, almost nine years after its launch in Latin America, the new model of the sedan is on its way to debut in other markets.

The new model will be the first member of the Chevrolet vehicles based on the Global Emerging Markets (GEM) platform. The GEM is a General Motors vehicle architecture, which is designed to support entry-level cross utility vehicles and cars for developing markets. The Onix, which has been a vehicle exclusive for the Latin American markets will now be sold in around 40 developing nations in the new form. Unlike its predecessor, which is a 5-door hatchback, the new Onix will be a 4-door model.

Scott Lawson, the general director of Chevrolet for SAIC-GM said, “Chevrolet has been at the forefront of delivering innovative models to match consumer preferences in China, the brand’s second-largest market.”

The new Onix is expected to replace the Sail. As per the available details about the upcoming car, there will be a large split grill with horizontal ventilation at the front. The headlights of the car would be narrower than that of the Sail, while the vehicle itself looks bigger than the latter.

No more details are available about the interior and powertrain of the sedan. However, it is expected that the compact sedan will arrive in two engine variants. One will be a 1.3-litre engine that will be able to deliver a maximum power of 101 PS, and the other will be a 1.0-litre three-cylinder mill that can deliver a maximum power of 114 PS.

The introduction of Onix in the Philippines market largely depends on the company’s desire to compete in the local subcompact sedan segment.
