Ascent’s 2.4-litre FA24 to power the next-gen Toyota 86 & Subaru BRZ
MANILA: The news that the Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ will be for another generation brought along with it a sigh of relief, didn't it? With the twins set to come out of their production facilities in a new avatar soon, something that has kept bugging is whether the performance coupes still feature the current 2.0-litre FA20 motor or get a new mill altogether? Putting all the speculations and rumours to rest, well almost, the news has broken that both the next-gen Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ will get power from the Subaru Ascent 2.4-litre FA24 engine.
So, here it is then. The 2.0-litre FA20 mill will make war for the Japanese crossover's much bigger 2.4-litre FA24 powerhouse. Besides, one interesting thing to note is that the Ascent's mill that also features a turbocharger on the crossover will come in a naturally-aspirated guise on the coupes. The performance figures should read somewhere around 230 PS of maximum power along with a peak torque of 260 Nm, more or less. Moreover, both the manual and automatic gearboxes will continue to be the two transmission options.
The next-gen Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are expected to step on the podium sometime in 2020 or 2021. Rumours also hint towards a concept to be displayed before the launch at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show that is set take place in the next month. Ready for the newest iterations of the two Japanese sports coupes? Well, we surely are and simply can't wait for them to make their way out in the flesh.
