Auto China 2024: Kia displays EV5

BEIJING: Kia’s booth at the ongoing Auto China 2024 was highlighted by the EV5.

In China, the Kia EV5 plays a significant role for the Hyundai-owned brand as it is the first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) platform model to be produced in the country.

It builds upon the success of the EV6 and EV9 being the third nameplate to use the carmaker’s Electric-Global Modular Platform.

Chinese car buyers will get the chance to choose from three variants: Standard, Long-Range, and Long-Range AWD.

Per Kia’s arm in China, the long-range trim gets an 88.1-kilowatt-hour battery and a 160-kilowatt motor. The range is approximately 720 kilometers (km) per charge.

Meanwhile, the range-topping long-range all-wheel drive variant will add excitement to the package with a maximum power output of 312 horsepower.

The Chinese-market Kia EV5 packs a handful of innovative customer-driven features like relaxation seats with massage functions, a console-integrated refrigerator and warmer, as well as a multi-table luggage board.

It also gets a robust list of advanced driver-assist technologies including highway driving assist 2, which Kia pointed out, helps drivers maintain distance from the vehicle in front, stay centered in their lane, change lanes, and adjust lateral positioning.

The EV5 also gets the Kia digital 2 smart key, which allows owners of the electric crossover to utilize the vehicle’s remote smart parking assist 2 feature.

Kia also unveiled the new Sonet for the Chinese market at Auto China 2024.

Kia already has a strong foothold in the Philippine EV segment thanks to the EV6.

The locally-available electric crossover is propelled by a single-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic to send power to the rear wheels.

Feeding power to the electric motor is a 77.4 kilowatt-hour battery that enables emissions free driving of up to 528 km.

The battery can be juiced up to 80 percent in under five minutes using an ultra high-speed 800-volt charger.

Complementing the electric powertrain unit are three drive modes, namely Normal, Sport, and Eco.
