BMW Panoramic Vision HUD to debut on Neue Klasse models

MANILA: The new BMW head-up display called BMW Panoramic Vision is set to begin production in 2025 along with the debut of the first Neue Klasse vehicles.

This was confirmed by BMW AG Board of Management Chairman Oliver Zipse in his remarks at the 2023 Annual Conference.

BMW is now creating an entirely new technology platform for the Neue Klasse, which takes its name from one of BMW's groundbreaking vehicles from the 1960s. This platform will establish new benchmarks for digitalization, sustainability, and electric vehicle design.

The revolutionary head-up display delivers an unique interaction and information space for all occupants by projecting over the entire width of the windscreen.

BMW AG Board of Development Member Frank Weber outlined the key advantages of this groundbreaking head-up display, saying, “The windscreen becomes a single large display with our new BMW Panoramic Vision, opening up completely new possibilities for the design of our vehicles. Whether the driver decides themselves which information they want to display in their own field of vision, or that all occupants can see the entire content. The revolutionary projection and the significantly more clearly structured cockpit give an impressive new feeling of space and driving. We are taking our proven ‘eyes on the road, hands on the wheel’ slogan to a new level.”

For the first time, all passengers may see displays that span the whole width of the windscreen thanks to cutting-edge projection technology. BMW Panoramic Vision projects information essential to the driver and passengers onto a dark-coated area at the lower edge of the windscreen with a higher light intensity and contrast. As a result, the image is always incredibly sharp and fills the whole width of the windscreen. The necessary information at the right time and place is always accessible in any driving situation.

The BMW Group was the first automaker to create a cockpit that concentrates on a particularly safe and focused driving experience. The BMW Panoramic Vision shows the consistent BMW driver-centric approach in the new BMW iDrive control system for the Neue Klasse. In the 1980s, the BMW 7 Series was the first vehicle to use on-board computers with digital displays. The original BMW iDrive, released in 2001, significantly reduced switches and buttons, resulting in a contemporary, minimalist interior. Soon after, the first batch of BMW head-up displays were produced in series. With the introduction of the new BMW Panoramic Vision head-up display for the Neue Klasse, the BMW Group's track record of creating groundbreaking technologies continues.

With the BMW Panoramic Vision, the BMW Group keeps improving the overall BMW iDrive operating philosophy. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this year, the BMW Group unveiled its groundbreaking BMW i Vision Dee vehicle. It demonstrates how, in the future, display control design and immersive user experiences can both benefit from an extended head-up display. By converting the windscreen windows into projection surfaces, the study shows how reality and the virtual world may coexist. This technology is now becoming a reality as a series version in Neue Klasse models.

The Neue Klasse will also have additional new control and information components from the new BMW iDrive.
