KEY TAKEAWAYS
What powers the BMW M3 CS?
The BMW M3 CS is powered by a 543hp TwinPower Turbo inline-six paired with M xDrive and eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox. When will the production of the BMW M3 CS begin?
Production of the BMW M3 CS will begin in the US in March 2023.Today, CS stands for “Competition Sport.” More power, a special chassis calibration, and innovative lightweight construction with carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components provide a thrilling performance experience without losing the BMW M3's usability or practicality.
An improved version of the high-revving inline six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology created for the M3 and M4 is housed under the lightweight CFRP hood of the 2024 BMW M3 CS. This 3.0-liter engine, which also serves as the foundation for the BMW M4 GT3's powertrain, is loaded with cutting-edge features that were developed specifically for racing. Due to its sleeveless, closed-deck design and great rigidity, the crankcase of this engine can withstand very high combustion pressures. With its excellent torsional resistance and capacity for high revs, the forged lightweight crankshaft enables power build-up. Due to the 3D-printed core of the cylinder head, it is possible to route the coolant ducts in a way that optimizes temperature control, which is not feasible when using traditional metal casting methods.
The S58 engine in the M3 CS has 40 more horsepower than the one in the BMW M3 Competition, with a maximum output of 543 horsepower between 6,250 and the redline of 7,200rpm. The increase in power was achieved mainly by increasing the two mono-scroll turbochargers' combined maximum boost pressure from 24.7psi to 30.5psi and making some model-specific modifications to the engine management.
The engine produces 479lb-ft of torque from a low 2,750rpm all the way up to 5,950rpm. An exceptionally rigid connection between the engine and the vehicle's structure is made possible by specially built engine mounts. Throttle inputs cause a sharp engine response and a direct transmission of power and torque to the drivetrain.
All of these improvements lead to a consistent power delivery across the rev range, and the dual-branch exhaust system, which includes electrically controlled flaps, a titanium rear silencer with a weight-reducing design, and two pairs of matte black tailpipes, produces an exhilarating soundtrack.
The M xDrive all-wheel drive system in the new BMW M3 CS uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to ensure a seamless and fully variable distribution of power between the front and rear axles. The torque produced by the engine is distributed to the M xDrive system through an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. The oil supply for the multi-plate clutch has been improved to maintain the system's efficiency during hard track driving. The rear-biased system and fully variable Active M Differential give the driver the signature M sensation during acceleration.
The driver can switch from the standard 4WD setting to 4WD Sport mode in the M Setup menu, which sends even more torque from the engine to the rear wheels. Additionally, drivers have the option of completely deactivating the DSC system and switching to 2WD mode. Skilled drivers are able to push themselves to their limits and enjoy a pure high performance driving experience by directing drive power only to the rear wheels and suppressing any DSC intervention.
The 2024 M3 CS expresses its edgy personality with a slew of unique design elements. Exposed carbon fiber surfaces on the roof, two channels running the length of the hood, the front splitter, front air intakes, M exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler, and rear apron combine with the black side skirts and M gills to create a striking contrast to the exclusive paint finish offered only on the BMW M3 CS. Also offered are Brooklyn Grey metallic, Black Sapphire metallic, and BMW Individual Signal Green.
An environment focused on driving pleasure and maximum performance combines cutting-edge digital technology with exclusive design elements inside the new BMW M3 CS. Standard M Carbon bucket seats are available for the driver and front passenger. They have integrated headrests with an illuminated “CS” badge and are entirely electric and heated. The seat's lightweight design is demonstrated by the use of CFRP in the structural components of the seat cushion and backrest, as well as the cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints.
Customers can also enjoy a wide range of comfort features and driver assist systems with the new BMW M3 CS. Among the standard features are Comfort Access, dual-zone automatic climate control, Harman Kardon surround sound system, park distance control, front collision warning, lane departure warning, and Speed Limit Info System.
