BMW's Spartanburg plant establishes new record with 443,810 X units made in 2021

MANILA: BMW Manufacturing achieved a new production record in 2021, making a total of 443,810 BMW X units. This represents a 20% increase versus the previous year and tops the previous record of 411,620 units achieved in 2019. Furthermore, the company manufactured a record number of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), delivering around 70,000 units.

In a statement, BMW Manufacturing President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Robert Engelhorn said, “The fact that the Plant Spartanburg team set a production record during a very unpredictable year is a testament to the commitment and flexibility of our associates. Our associates continue to build premium quality products that are in high demand by our customers around the world.”

This is the fourth time that the BMW Manufacturing plant in South Carolina, USA produced over 400,000 units. The chart below shows the breakdown of 2021 production by model.

The number of electric vehicles manufactured at BMW Plant Spartanburg increased by 48%, with around 70,000 PHEVs delivered to customers around the world. 39,883 X5 xDrive45e units were produced, while over 30,000 X3 xDrive30e units were generated.

“Electric mobility is becoming a growth driver and success factor for the company. Our plant is fully on board to support BMW Group’s electrification strategy. We look forward to adding the all-new BMW XM to the Plant Spartanburg family of X models. Series production of the BMW XM, the first plug-in hybrid high-performance model in the BMW M portfolio, will begin in late 2022,” Dr. Engelhorn added.

BMW Manufacturing significantly contributed to the brand’s sales success in the US in 2021. A total of 179,840 Plant Spartanburg units were sold, accounting for 53.4% of total BMW sales in the country. The X3 and X5 were the best-selling BMW models in America.

Since 1992, the BMW Group has invested US$11.9 billion in its South Carolina plant. BMW Manufacturing is the largest BMW plant in the world, manufacturing over 1,500 units per day. More than two-thirds of the cars produced at the company are exported to around 125 countries. It has been the leading exporter by value in the US for the past seven years. The lineup includes five top-selling BMW X models, four Motorsport X models, and two PHEV X models. The facility has over 11,000 employees and a production capacity of up to 450,000 vehicles.
